Habilitation Technician-Communication
(Speech Therapy Student Preferred)
Part Time: 12-16 hours per week. 12 hours per week during the school year, 16 hours per week during the summer.
Flexible afternoons/evenings, some weekends required.
Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, the Habilitation Technician- Communication will work closely with the Speech Therapist to perform routine tasks supporting the habilitation needs of individuals with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. This job primarily focuses on assisting residents in achieving the communication goals that have been developed by the Speech Therapist.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF POSITION
Support Functions
  • Interacts with residents and staff with high attention to engagement. Must be alert to and interested in the needs of intellectually delayed, physically delayed and/or multi-handicapped children and adults.
  • Assists with the set-up of assistive devices for switch access and communication.
  • Verifies that adaptive equipment is accessible to staff and well maintained for completion of communication goals and guidelines.
  • Assists residents with access to computer games and environmental control switches.
  • Assists with training of staff on communication goals and guidelines for residents.
  • Assists with the programming of communication devices and assistive technology.
  • Assist with the creation of visuals using Boardmaker and Microsoft images.
  • Conducts hearing aid checks and applies hearing devices.
  • Monitors and stays alert to the changing needs and condition of residents at all times; maintains a working knowledge of resident’s Individual Plan (IP) and demonstrates use of appropriate behavioral intervention strategies as specified in the IP.
  • Identifies, properly reports, and documents pertinent information, including health information and unusual incidents, regarding residents to appropriate person(s).
  • Demonstrates competence in safe lifting, positioning, physical assistance to and transferring of residents, including appropriate responsiveness to emergency and evacuation procedures; guides others to respond appropriately for scheduled drills and actual emergency situations.
  • Interacts courteously and appropriately with residents, families, visitors and coworkers under a variety of conditions and circumstances and remains mindful of the opinions and feelings of others.
  • Exercises discretion, protects and respects residents, staff and their right to privacy; maintains confidentiality of information as required by HIPPA and policy.
  • Participates in and attends various meetings and trainings as required.

SUPERVISOR RESPONSIBILITIES
No supervision of staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Experience
  • Applicants must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Student in an approved program (graduate or undergraduate) for Speech Therapyis preferred.
Licenses/Credentials/Certifications
CPR and First Aid training required.
Skills/Specialized Knowledge/Abilities
  • General computer knowledge is helpful.
  • Must be able to work effectively as a team member while developing and maintaining professional relationships in the workplace.
  • Flexibility of schedule in order to meet operational needs is required.
  • Ability to remain calm and use good judgment, especially in emergency situations, is required.
