Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care (UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC’s 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school.
Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.

Posting Summary
Rutgers The State University is seeking a Habilitation Counselor in the Residential – Adult 24 Hour Supervised Group Home of Rutgers University Behavioral Healthcare.
The primary purpose of the Habilitation Counselor position is to provide day-to-day direct care, face-to-face case management and supportive services to consumer residents who reside in the UBHC’s 24 Hour Adult Residential programs as directed by the Program Supervisor in accordance with all regulatory requirements.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Assumes direct care responsibilities for consumer residents in the Residential program and provide face-to-face supportive counseling, crisis intervention, psycho-education, skills building, and case management services as indicated.
  • Counsels a caseload of consumers/residents as required with empathy and concern.
  • Involves consumer residents and/or family, significant others in jointly formulating residential treatment/individualized recovery plans reflecting measurable goals and objectives based on consumer input, clinical assessment, and treatment team recommendations in accordance with all regulatory requirements.
  • Engages consumer/resident in appropriate professional treatment interventions based on assessment.
  • Responds with sensitivity to spiritual, cultural and socioeconomic issues of consumer/resident.
  • Manages termination issues and documentation in an effective and timely manner.
  • Manages caseload demands effectively, while considering both, quality of care and program needs.
  • Demonstrates receptivity to supervisory feedback to enhance counseling skills.
  • Supervises, organizes and supports recreational and/or socialization activities for consumer residents.
  • Provides psycho-education in the consumer resident’s home or residential program to enhance community.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a mental health field plus one (1) year of related experience in a mental health setting.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Applicants possessing a degree in Social Work must have an active New Jersey certification/licensure as required by the State Board of Social Work.
  • Valid driver’s license required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Physical Demands:
  • The employee spends much time driving, lifting, walking, standing, bending and talking with consumers.
  • Assists consumer residents with maintaining a residential environment that meets all regulatory requirements.
  • Assisting consumer residents with activities of daily living. Transport of consumer.
  • The employee can expect to lift up to 30 pounds.


Work Environment:
  • Highly active settings with mental health consumers contact throughout the shift.
  • The need for staff to provide crisis intervention is common.
