Job description

CLASS SUMMARY:
Performs routine support and para-professional work involving a variety of duties related to the oversight and administration of a recreation center including recreation programs, classes, events, and activities; and does related work as required under the immediate supervisor of the center director and assistant.
TYPICAL CLASS ESSENTIAL DUTIES:(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)
  1. Organizes, conducts, and supervises programs and special events. Participates in both planning and program evaluation. Distributes, collects, inspects, and accounts for equipment. Demonstrates proper use of equipment.
  2. Performs clerical tasks such as completing enrollment forms, tracking attendance and room counts and may use a variety of software programs including the department's recreation management software. Serves as a cashier; operates cash register and provides receipts; receives payment for products, services, or fees; and balances cash drawer.
  3. Performs customer service duties such as professionally and politely greeting all guests and answering questions in person or over the phone; explaining Parks and Recreation programs and activities; and conducting center tours.
  4. Responsible for custodian functions throughout the facility, up to and including performing cleaning tasks such as: trash removal, sweeping, dust-mopping floors, cleaning windows, parking lot and outdoor litter clean-up, and set-up and breakdown of rooms/areas for activities. May perform basic maintenance tasks.
  5. Responsible for the security of the facility, to include following documented procedures to open and close the facility. Provides for the safe operation of recreation center(s) through inspection of the facility and equipment. Maintains order and discipline among patrons by enforcing rules and policies.
  6. Performs related activities as directed by the Community Center Director/Assistant or other department supervisors.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE (positions in this class typically require):
High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.); or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Prior experience in the recreation field and customer service are preferred.
LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (positions in this class typically require):
Licensing Requirements:
  • First Aid/CPR & AED Certification
KNOWLEDGE(position requirements at entry):
Knowledge of:
  • Developing recreational programs and administering programs within a community center;
  • Customer service principles;
  • Computers and related software applications including the department's recreation management software program.
SKILLS(position requirements at entry):
Skill in:
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Command of basic arithmetic;
  • Possessing and displaying resourcefulness and responsibility;
  • Working independently and following instructions;
  • Supervising and interacting well with children, adults, and patrons of all ability levels;
  • Planning, developing, and managing programs and/or events;
  • Providing customer service;
  • Preparing and maintaining records and reports;
  • Communications, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperatures and blood borne pathogens. May be required to work early morning, nights, weekends, and holidays.
