We are looking for a dedicated Guidebook Editor and Researcher to join our Book Department in Edmonds, WA. This is a full-time, hybrid position (40 hrs./wk., 3 days in the office, 2 days remote). The overall responsibility of this role is editing Rick Steves’ guidebooks and articles, reviewing maps and proofs, and other materials under the pressure of a production schedule. Editors may also be asked to work on special projects as needed. This position reports to the Managing Editor.
Responsibilities:
Edits and reviews guidebooks, maps, proofs, articles, phrase books, and various other publications, ensuring that content is user-friendly, accurate, and adheres to RSE style
Incorporates updated research material and information into new guidebook editions
Tracks and implements corrections and updates across related content
Helps produce derivative products from core content
Compiles Rick’s writing into timely articles and writes new material as assigned
Manages editorial projects as needed
Maintains good working relationships with publishing house counterparts, researchers, co-authors, and newspaper and magazine editors
Performs primary research and fact-checks to update guidebook materials (either at the office or in Europe), fill in gaps left by researchers, and freshen articles
Other responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications:
B.A. or B.S. degree
4+ years of editing and writing experience, ideally on guidebooks
Thorough knowledge of Rick Steves’ travel philosophy, guidebooks, and writing style
European travel experience, ideally using Rick Steves’ guidebooks, a plus
Equal proficiency in content editing, proofreading, and writing
Strong organizational and multitasking skills
Excellent attention to detail
Ability to meet deadlines and manage time effectively
Strong teamwork abilities
Proficient in Word, Outlook, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat; Teams/Sharepoint and Wrike a plus
