Job description

Job Description:
The Functional Living Skills (FLS) Special Education Assistant provides support to the Corbett K-6th Grade instructional program by assisting the supervision and instruction of special needs students, observing and documenting student progress, implementing Individualized Education Plans (IEP) for academic instruction and assists students with intensive special behavioral or specialized medical needs as defined in the IEP.
Essential Job Functions:

  1. Confer with teachers, supervisor, and other colleagues to plan daily routines and activities, including specific delegated health care as defined by the IEP which may include a medical or behavior support plan.
  2. Daily report on time to the classroom learning specialist to provide support for students who use wheelchairs or experience other mobility issues. At the end of the school day, safely assist students out to their buses or other types of transportation.
  3. Performs related instructional, behavioral, small group or 1:1 behavioral safety supports during all student school activities.
  4. Diaper or provide feeding support per a feeding protocol (at the direction of a feeding team) under the direction of the learning specialist.
  5. Assist students with physical education or other recreational activities, including PE or recess ensuring students are safe during student learning at all times.
  6. Prepare worksheets, organize materials, daily collect data and monitor academic or behavioral progress with direction from the teacher or behavior specialist.
  7. Participate in the implementation of positive behavioral Plans (PBSPs).
  8. Assist in student transportation when needed, typically for students needing access to 1:1 support (medical or behavioral).
  9. Successfully complete state mandated training for medical and behavioral supports (e.g. Safety Care, BBP, CPR First Aid, Medication Administration, other).
  10. Implement physical or occupational therapy assistance and support with direction from the district OT or PT.

Preferred:
  • Maintain a valid driver's license and vehicle available for on the job use.
  • Complete either Type 10 or Type 20 Activity driver approval through ODE at the direction and training of the District, if necessary. (Only to be applied when taking field trips or community based instruction).

Other job functions:
Attend professional development or classes that support this position. (e.g. Safety Care, Autism, Behavior Support) and other mandatory annual training as required.
Perform other related duties as assigned by the immediate Supervisor.
Adhere to all Corbett school district board policies and procedures.
Must complete fingerprint-based criminal history verification.
This position is for a four day student contact week, 8.5 hours/day, 154 days/year.
Availability to start work and possibly prior to that date for training.
Knowledge and Skills:
  1. Ability to follow directions, follow through with teacher directed plans, maintain a positive working attitude while working with staff such as other coworkers, administrators, teachers, and transportation staff.
  2. Ability to listen and make sound decisions on a day to day basis which includes during an emergency situation.
  3. Effectively work with students in high stress environments.
  4. Ability to problem solve using effective verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Maintain boundaries with parents who may ask confidential questions. Not provide personal phone or other personal information with parents.
  6. Ability to take daily data that will assist with progress monitoring and other behavioral data collection.
  7. Maintain an environment that honors the diversity of students in the classroom and promotes the development and advancement of traditionally underrepresented or underserved populations with inclusion and equity.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Preferred two years post secondary education or associate's degree.
Preferred previous experience working with medically fragile and students who experience communication or behavioral challenges.
Basic knowledge and ability to perform the tasks assigned to the job.
Physical requirements:
Ability to walk, climb, sit and or stand four hours plus a day.
Ability to squat, crawl, and or run occasionally as required to perform job duties.
This job may require heavy lifting up to 35 pounds and the ability to assist students weighing up to 150 pounds.
