Job description

The Tactical Defense Systems Group works to understand air defense issues, in particular, air vehicle survivability, vulnerability of U.S. Air Force (USAF) aircraft to weapons systems, electronic countermeasures, and air surveillance for homeland defense.  The group focuses on understanding USAF and threat air defense systems through tests and measurements. Test activities include flight, field, and laboratory testing. The group operates two airplanes, all highly instrumented, and numerous ground systems as needed for test efforts. The group also prototypes advanced sensor concepts and augments the instrumentation of existing sensors. The group's activities continue to evolve in parallel with USAF efforts, but the emphasis remains on providing answers to questions from our Air Force sponsors by conducting field measurements using state-of-the-art instrumentation and then analyzing the resulting data.

Responsibilities:

  • The successful candidate will focus on architecting and developing software or firmware for the group's many advanced prototypes in the following area: radars, RF seekers, jammers, infrared search and track (IRST), infrared imaging (IIR) seekers, IR countermeasures, or other EO/IR systems
  • Opportunities to work provide software support across the full life cycle of advanced prototype sensors: system design, implementation, integration checkout, lab/field/flight testing, and detailed data analysis
  • Job related activities will involve designing software/firmware architecture, implementing advanced signal and image processing algorithms, building robust user interfaces, and developing data analysis tools
  • The candidate will work as part of a team, as well as with component and system vendors, to build robust testbed systems to meet project goals
  • Operate the group's one-of-a-kind sensor systems in laboratory, field, or flight testing to collect detailed data for answering key questions related to air defense issues
  • Perform detailed data analysis on collected data and generate presentations for senior leaders to advise acquisition decisions
  • Serve as a mentor to other staff

Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • In lieu of a PhD, a Master's degree with 5 years of directly related experience will be considered
  • Experience with embedded systems, firmware, microprocessors, object-oriented programming, C++, user interfaces is desired
  • Experience with AI and Machine Learning is desirable
  • Knowledge of related automated design tools and experience with analysis tools such as MATLAB is required
  • Ability to demonstrate effective oral and written communications skills is essential
  • Laboratory, field, and/or flight test experience is desirable
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a government top secret security clearance
