Summary of Job Duties:
  1. Plan, schedule, supervise, and coordinate all grounds and maintenance activities; supervise grounds personnel, including scheduling, assigning tasks, coordinating, and directing work across various county buildings; recommend disciplinary actions, approve leave requests, and conduct annual performance reviews; collaborate with other managers for seamless grounds maintenance across multiple buildings.
  2. Implement grounds maintenance programs, including tasks such as cutting and trimming grass, landscaping, and snow/ice removal; operate light to heavy equipment (e.g., tractors, mowers, chain saws, edgers, trimmers, snowplow, dump truck) for grounds upkeep; perform skilled and semi-skilled preventative maintenance repairs on mechanical equipment and machinery; lift heavy loads as necessary in the performance of duties.
  3. Determine materials, equipment, and supplies needed for grounds maintenance; estimate and purchase equipment and supplies, ensuring cost-effectiveness; maintain accurate records of costs, time, work, and equipment usage.
  4. Apply specific trade practices to repair, install, and maintain building facilities; perform semi-skilled maintenance repairs and services (e.g., changing light bulbs, roof checks, repairs); Monitor contracts and projects; may pick up parts and make deliveries.
  5. Assist in preparing the annual grounds maintenance budget; maintain an inventory of equipment and supplies; determine necessary supplies and equipment for functions; keep accurate records, generate reports, and maintain required documentation; communicate effectively with suppliers and vendors.
  6. Performs duties of co-workers as required or assigned; travel to various County Facilities to
    perform duties as assigned.
  7. Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years experience with landscape or grounds related work with demonstrated leadership skills
  • basic knowledge of supervision and demonstrable ability to perform moderate to heavy physical labor for extended periods of time and under adverse weather conditions
  • Or the equivalent combination of education and experience which indicates an advanced knowledge of landscaping design principles and practices, grounds maintenance, and team leadership.
  • Pesticide License; within 6 months of Hire
  • Valid driver’s license issued by the state of residency.
Hazardous Working Conditions
Work in uncomfortably hot or cold environments, in awkward and cramped positions, or on ladders; could require working outdoors and be subject to inclement weather; lift up to 100 lbs without material handling device; ability to use and wear personal protective equipment: half-face respirators/dust mask, safety glasses, body harness for fall protection, arc flash clothing level two protection (hard hat, Class 2 gloves/leather, face shield, neck protector, coveralls), fire rated long sleeve shirts, earplugs/muffs and hand protection.
Position Specific Qualifications
  • Candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screening. Current employees transferring to this work unit are also subject to pre-transfer employment drug screening. Employees are subject to drug and/or alcohol testing based on reasonable suspicion.
  • Upon employment, employees must provide a DNA sample, which will be kept on file with the Hamilton County Coroner. Provision of the DNA sample is a condition of employment and will be maintained as a confidential medical record separate from the employee's personnel file and used solely in accordance with the law.
  • Meet maximum weight requirements for ladders, personal fall protection equipment, and aerial lifts. Maximum lbs. include man and tools. Type 1A “Extra Heavy Duty Industrial Ladder” – maximum capacity of 300 lbs. Type 1AA
  • Special Duty Industrial Ladder” – maximum capacity of 375 lbs. Most personnel fall arrest equipment (full-body harness & lanyards) is labeled with a capacity limit of 310 lbs. Single Man Lifts – 300-350 lbs. May stand for long periods of time, lift heavy objects.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Associate degree in horticulture or related field;
  • Training and experience which indicates an advanced knowledge of
    landscaping design principles and practices, and grounds maintenance.
