Job Summary Job Summary Plans, coordinates, supervises and manages the grounds maintenance activities of the District.

CURRENT VACANCY: One full-time management position, with full benefits, at the Facilities Maintenance Department. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance. Maximum health and welfare employer contribution is $36,842.73 annually.

Job Description / Essential Elements: Print GLENDALE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CLASS DESCRIPTION GROUNDS SUPERVISOR DEFINITION Plans, coordinates, supervises and manages the grounds maintenance activities of the District. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED General direction is provided by the Assistant Director, and/or Director, Facilities Maintenance. Assignments require the direct supervision of grounds maintenance personnel, and large equipment operators.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES Plans, coordinates, and manages the maintenance of grounds throughout the District. Analyzes grounds maintenance needs as requested and incorporates proactive management practices necessary to execute a cost effective grounds maintenance program. Schedules and assigns work concerned with irrigation systems mowing, edging, weeding, pruning, planting, trimming, spraying, sweeping, and related grounds maintenance activities.

Supervises the installation, maintenance, and repair of sports turf, annual color, trees and shrubs. Communicates with grounds personnel regarding task scheduling and challenges. Communicates with superiors regarding grounds maintenance procedures, feasibility and timing of projects, and operational cost estimates.

Selects all plants and materials necessary for landscaping and athletic field needs. Designs landscape plans and irrigation systems and supervises their installation and maintenance. Able to trouble shoot advanced irrigation controllers.

Supervises the maintenance, repair, and replacement of outdoor benches, swings, and other playground equipment. Manages the maintenance of all district vehicles and powered mobile equipment. Inspects work in progress to see that proper grounds maintenance methods are being followed based on C.L.C.A.

(California Landscape Contractors Association) and I.S.A. (International Society of Arborists) standards. Prepares and provides specifications for formal bids, in assigned categories, recommends award of bids, and administers projects to closeout.

Reviews requisitions for the purchase of materials, supplies and equipment, as assigned. Participates in the preparation and administration of the annual grounds budget, and recommends cost saving practices for improvement. Prepares and maintains a variety of grounds maintenance records and activity reports.

Confers with local school site officials regarding grounds maintenance procedures and activities. Communicates proactively with Principals and Administration. Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.

Performs related work as required. CLASS QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Methods, materials, supplies, and equipment used in grounds management activities. Safe work practices and personal protective equipment.

Common plant, tree, and turf diseases and pests, and methods used in their eradication or control. Principles and practices of written documentation in preparation of reports and records. Soil characteristics and treatment procedures for various types and the problems associated with each.

Principles of supervision, training, performance evaluation, and AB 2260 "Healthy Schools Act.". Ability to: Estimate material and labor costs for grounds maintenance activities. Plan, assign, and supervise the activities involved in efficient cost effective landscape management.

Prepare and maintain records, reports and written documentation. Use common office equipment and computer technology, preferably Microsoft Office suite, to maintain records and prepare reports. Understand and communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Establish team unity and vision and maintain effective working relationships. Supervise, train, coach, mentor, and evaluate subordinates. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS Minimum Requirements: Education: High School diploma or general education degree (GED).

Experience: Five years of experience in the management of landscaped grounds and athletic fields including three years at the supervisory level. Desirable: Written and oral proficiency in a second language. Completion of courses in turf management, landscape management, horticulture, supervision, organization, or management.

LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license. Ability to be insured at standard vehicle liability and property damage insurance rates and maintain insurability. WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Employees in this classification must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others.

These include but are not limited to: Standing and walking for extended periods of time. Sitting, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and bending at the waist. Lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling objects generally weighing up to sixty (60) pounds.

Agility to move arms in all directions; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate equipment, use tools, office equipment including a computer keyboard, and other related items. Seeing to read a variety of materials, hearing, and speaking to exchange information. Walking over rough and uneven surfaces such as athletic fields, turf, yards, construction areas and other outdoor areas.

Driving a vehicle between work sites, within, or outside the district to conduct work, attend meetings, seminars, or training. Working Environment: Employees in this classification primarily work outdoors. Work environment generally includes exposure to weather conditions and temperature variations, sharp objects, dust, chemicals, odors, machinery with moving parts, and moving vehicles.

Noise level can be moderate to high.
