Job Summary: We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Pathology Grossing Technician to join our esteemed medical laboratory team. As a Grossing Technician, you will play a crucial role in the initial processing and examination of surgical specimens, ensuring accurate and precise documentation for further analysis by our pathologists. This is a rewarding opportunity for individuals passionate about pathology and contributing to the diagnostic process.
Responsibilities:
1. Perform meticulous gross dissection, measuring, and examination of tissue specimens, documenting macroscopic features and abnormalities through dictating into the computer.
2. Obtain representative tissue samples for histological processing, ensuring comprehensive analysis by pathologists.
3. Maintain the integrity and quality of specimens through proper preservation techniques, such as formalin fixation.
4. Assists supervisor with all other duties as assigned.
5. Performing duties relating to the maintenance of the laboratory when needed. Cleans workstation between and after case dissection completion. Ensures proper maintenance of equipment, sterilization of instruments and discard of waste and material properly. Notifies supervisor of low supply inventory and assists with supply management.
6. Document detailed patient information, clinical history, and gross examination findings in the laboratory information system.
7. Adhere to strict safety protocols and maintain a clean and organized work environment to prevent cross-contamination and ensure the safety of laboratory personnel.
8. Assist in quality control and quality assurance activities to ensure accurate and reliable results.
9. Collaborate effectively with pathologists, histotechnologists, and other laboratory staff to optimize workflow and patient care.
10. Participate in ongoing training and educational opportunities to stay updated with advances in pathology and laboratory practices.
11. Maintain and clean grossing equipment regularly to ensure optimal performance.
12. Comply with all relevant regulations and maintain confidentiality of patient information.
13. Demonstrate a commitment to patient care and contribute to the overall success of the laboratory team.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, Chemistry, Medical Technology, or a related science (or 60 credits in Chemistry/Biology constituting a biological science major) as required by CLIA.
Prior experience as a Pathology Grossing Technician or related role is preferred but not required; we welcome newly qualified candidates.
Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment while maintaining accuracy.
Demonstrated knowledge of grossing techniques, tissue handling, and laboratory safety practices.
Familiarity with laboratory information systems and computer proficiency.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies and methodologies.
Able to lift up to 50 lbs. and work with formalin.
Understanding of medical terminology and basic anatomy.
ASCP certification (Grossing Technician) is a plus.
