Performs responsible technical work involving the cultivation of plants largely in greenhouse. The principle function of an employee in this class is to plant, cultivate, water, fertilize, and spray plants largely in greenhouse. Sow seeds and plant cuttings. The position also requires oversight of supplies, materials, tools and equipment to perform this work. The work is performed under the direct supervision of a Parks Superintendent, but extensive leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. The duties of this classification will require specialized training and experience with a variety of plants and other horticultural species specific to greenhouse and conservatory environments. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with other City employees, volunteers, outside contractors, neighborhood associations and the public.
This is a Three-Quarter Time position and must be available to work weekends, with seasonal adjustments to schedule.

- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a post-secondary college degree (associate or bachelors) in floriculture, horticulture, or related field.
- Two years of employed technical experience in greenhouse operations.
- Any equivalent combination in which related education and experience are interchangeable at the rate of one year of education for one year of experience can be substituted.
- Applicable Pesticide Applicator's License 3G and OT within 6 months of appointment;
- Candidates for positions in this class must pass a post-employment offer physical examination and drug screen;
- Possession of a valid Iowa driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
- Determine moisture requirements.
- Detect and identify pest infestations and determine proper IPM techniques appropriate for controlling such pests.
- Set fertilizer timing and metering devices that control frequency and amount of nutrients to be introduced into irrigation system.
- Read and interpret sensing indicators and regulate environmental controls.
- Prune plants, cull flowers, branches, and plants.
- Direct and coordinate other workers at the City Greenhouse in the absence of the Supervisor.
- Answer public inquiries and participate in events or activities to educate the public on various plant collections.
- Provide technical assistance to various public organizations and other City facilities.
- Perform related work as required.
