This position is an important and integral part of the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium’s Planning and Design Department, which designs, oversees, reviews, and revises operational and exhibit signs and sign systems for the Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf, and The Wilds. INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
- Working in a professional manner alongside internal clients (departments) of the Zoo, Zoombezi Bay, Safari Golf and The Wilds, as well as vendors (which offer additional support in the sign design/production process)
- Revise and/or possibly perform minor sign design development throughout various departments of the four properties. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Wayfinding/Directional
- Food and Beverage
- Retail
- Guest Relations
- Philanthropic/Corporate Partnerships
- Ride Operations
- Animal Care
- Events & Promotions
- Education
- Facilities/Construction
- Additional support in sign installations and/or removals (light use of tools)
- Other duties as assigned.
Position pays $15 per hour.
Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm (40 hours per week)
- Courteous and professional correspondence through voice and electronic interactions, including the use of correct spelling and grammar.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum two years of college courses in graphic design/visual communication design preferred.
- Possess basic graphic design theory/skills in layout composition with typography, color, images, and graphics.
- Proficient in the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) preferred.
- You will be given two electronic exercises during the interview (one in Illustrator and the other in Photoshop) to demonstrate your skill set.
- Know basic math skills, including minor calculations, measuring, and dimensions.
- Able to work on ladders, lift, carry and pull supplies or materials up to 60lbs of force occasionally and perform general labor.
- Able to work in varied weather conditions (i.e. heat, rain, snow).
- Able to use small hand tools and art supplies.
- Able to balance multiple assignments successfully.
- Excellent attention to detail, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Able to provide excellent guest service by interacting with guests positively and upholding the Make it G.R.E.A.T. (internal) standards required.
- Able to maintain courteous and helpful behavior.
- Able to maintain an appropriate employee appearance.
- Subject to Drug Free Workplace Policy.

NON-REQUIREMENTS, BUT KNOWING IS A PLUS:
- Knowledge and application of basic sign materials
- Knowledge of uploading/downloading to/from FTP sites and websites
- Proof reading vendor’s work as well as your own
