Position Summary

The mission of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons (VP&S) Office for Research is to facilitate the highest caliber of biomedical research, from basic to translational to clinical, among the VP&S faculty, students, and staff at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. The office works across departments, centers, and institutes to foster interdisciplinary research collaborations, and supports efforts to secure funding for such collaborations. To fulfill this goal, the VP&S Office for Research is seeking a Grant & Research Development Associate who will work closely with the Director of Research and Strategic Initiatives to assist faculty in the writing, editing, and strategic planning of individual as well as complex, multi-investigator, and multi-institutional grants. This is an opportunity to work one-on-one with faculty as well as in teams to create compelling proposals that will further individual investigator studies and larger, school-wide initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a combined science and writing background as well as extensive experience with writing grant proposals, particularly for NIH.

Responsibilities

• Along with the director, work with leadership and scientific faculty across fields to develop and facilitate large grant opportunities that align with the strategic goals of the medical school. Support for large grant opportunities includes a comprehensive editorial review as well as write and/or provide writing support for a variety of scientific disciplines; advise investigators on proposal content and organization; assist with updates across the application as the science and research aims change; and contribute to formatting and figure editing.
• Guide and advise junior faculty, postdoctoral scientists, and students with their first research grant, career development, and/or fellowship submissions by ensuring that their proposals are clear, concise and compelling through writing and editing assistance.
• Facilitate, manage, and coordinate the proposal's by working with individuals at various levels and offices throughout the University to ensure successful integration of all grant components and compliance with all funding solicitation and sponsor requirements.
• Generate compelling, accurate, and appropriate content to reflect the research strategy such as compiling institutional information.  
• Collaborate with PIs in developing project timelines and in the management of the proposal, from concept to submission.
• Create and maintain online descriptions for facilities & other resources as well as grant component templates according to sponsor policies that will provide standards for and foster the submission of complete and thorough applications.
• Identify large, multidisciplinary funding opportunities from federal and non-federal sources that capitalize on existing strengths and expertise at VP&S and communicate with sponsors as appropriate.
• Perform other related duties to the work described herein and inline with the office's mission.

    Applicants may be asked to complete a writing assessment to highlight their writing and editing skills.

    This is a hybrid position and we will consider other work arrangements. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience plus four years of related experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree, preferably in the biomedical sciences

• Master's degree, preferably in the biomedical sciences.

• M.D. or Ph.D. in a basic science, translational, or clinical field 

• History of related proposal development and/or grant writing experience and/or contract experience.

Other Requirements

• Experience in proposal writing at a higher education institution and/or in a research setting.

• Requires a highly organized, enthusiastic and personable individual with strong writing and presentation skills as well as previous grant writing/submission experience.

• Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret complex scientific, medical or technical data is required.

• Requires flexibility and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritize among a large number of diverse responsibilities.

• Must be able to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment as well as work collaboratively and adapt to changing processes and procedures.

• Excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills required.

• Capability to work both independently and as a team member in-person and remotely, ability to multi-task and respond professionally in challenging situations is essential.

• Experience with Microsoft Office applications (i.e., Outlook, Excel, and Word)

• Cover letter and 2 scientific writing samples required to be considered
