Job description

The Energy Research and Development Division (ERDD) deploys over $300 million annually to advance new scientific approaches and technology innovations to meet the state's clean energy and climate change policies including but not limited to the areas of renewable energy supply, building and industrial decarbonization, sustainable transportation, energy storage, energy distribution, resilience and reliability, and carbon management. The Technology Innovation & Entrepreneurship Branch supports clean energy entrepreneurship by helping companies commercialize and scale-up technologies for success in the marketplace through funding, training, resources, and expertise. The Tech-to-Market Unit operates programs funded by the Electric Program Investment Charge (EPIC) that provide climate benefits and cost savings for investor-owned utility ratepayers. These programs include CalSEED, CalTestBed, BRIDGE, and RAMP, supporting entrepreneurs in the technology development process from the concept stage through low-rate initial production.
Under the direction of the Supervisor of the Tech-to-Market Unit, the Associate Energy Specialist (AES) serves as part of interdisciplinary and/or interdivisional teams to assist in the planning and implementation of the Energy Commission's Research and Development (R&D) programs. The AES performs work at the full journey-level and independently performs responsible, varied and complex technical and analytical work on consultative and analytical assignments such as grant agreement management, R&D planning, stakeholder engagement, events coordination, information exchange, and R&D project and program evaluation. The AES independently performs a variety of analytical and technical tasks in support of R&D on emerging clean energy technologies. The incumbent may serve as a team leader on projects with focused scope.

Working Conditions
The CEC supports a hybrid workplace model with office-based and remote-centered workers. Limited in-person attendance and occasional travel may be required based on the needs of the division. Regular and consistent attendance is essential to successful performance. This position is remote-centered, which means the incumbent works 50 percent or more of their time from an alternate work location.

Department Information The CEC was established by the Legislature in 1974 to address energy challenges facing the state. The California Energy Commission seeks an Associate Energy Specialist or an Energy Analyst in the Energy Research and Development Division/Technology Innovation & Entrepreneurship Branch/Tech-to-Market Unit.
