Job Description
The New York City Comptroller, an independently elected official, is the Chief Financial Officer of the City of New York. The mission of the office is to promote the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of New York City government, in order to secure a thriving future for all New Yorkers and build a more just, equitable, and resilient city. We utilize the tools and responsibilities that the City Charter assigns us to ensure that City government is budgeting wisely, investing strategically, living up to its promises and obligations, and keeping a sharp eye on the long-term challenges to come.
The Bureau of Labor Law sets and enforces the prevailing and living wage, and benefit rates for workers, laborers, and mechanics employed on New York City Public Work projects as well as building service employees on City contracts and certain properties that receive tax exemptions, in accordance with its mandate under state law. The goal of the Worker's Rights Bureau is to build upon the work that the BLL already does to combat wage theft to expand worker's rights and enforcement through legislation, policy, procurement, and corporate shareholder engagement initiatives, while strengthening the office's outreach strategies to educate New Yorkers on their labor rights.
Responsibilities of the Workers' Rights Intern include, but are not limited to:
-Performing research and writing on Workers' Rights issues
-Providing assistance with events convened by or featuring the Comptroller
-Participating in community and outreach events such as know-your-rights presentations to workers
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT: Matriculation at an accredited graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in graduate school.
IMPORTANT:
- Our office is located at the David Dinkins Municipal Building, 1 Centre St. in Manhattan/New York.
- All interns will work in-person in the office, Monday - Thursday, 28 hours per week.
- The employment period will be from June 3 - August 1, 2024.
Qualifications
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in an accredited college, university or law school.
