Grading / Pipe Crew Members

SUMMARY OF POSITION:

The construction laborer performs tasks involving physical labor at heavy construction projects. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tempers, power saws, cement mixers, small mechanical hoists, surveying and measuring equipment and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites, dig trenches, set braces to support the sides of excavations, erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris, dead and other hazardous waste materials.

DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

The laborer works on construction projects, dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools. Level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels and rakes. Lubricate, clean and repair equipment and tools. Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards. Load, unload, identify building materials, machinery, tools and distribute them to the appropriate locations according to the project plans and specifications. Must wear personal protective equipment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Works on construction projects, dig trenches to desired or required depths, by hand or using trenching tools.
• Level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels and rakes.
• Must be able to crawl, stoop, bend and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time as required to perform duties.
• Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull up to at least 50 pounds often
• Clean and prepare construction sites to eliminate possible hazards.
• Load, unload, identify building materials, machinery, tools and distribute them to the appropriate locations according to the project plans and specifications.
• Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
• Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions
• Must be able to climb on and off equipment safely
• Use of hand tools in a bent over position for prolonged periods (ie. Saw cutting pavement, concrete finishing and forming, placing manhole covers, etc.)=

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Previous experience working on construction projects desired. Workers are encouraged to ask about jobs, learn about the work being done and seek opportunities to receive on-the-job training.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Must be able to cooperate and work well with other construction employees. Must be able to take direction from supervisors or more experienced workers. Must be able to carry out simple instructions in a safe and efficient manner.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Repetitive, physical work. Regularly exposed to dusty conditions, extreme temperatures, high noise level, airborne particles, ambient weather conditions, hazardous machinery, precarious places, proximity to other employees. To avoid injury, safety clothing required along with safety devices to protect eyes, head, or hearing.
