POSITION SUMMARY
The Sorter is responsible for safely and efficiently processed incoming plastic materials so that outbound commodities are acceptable for use in other production cells. Receive, identify, and sort materials so they are clear of contaminates and sorted by desired combination of plastics for production. Must be able to operate a Forklift.
ESSENTIAL TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Identify type and any undesirable elements in material. Hand sort and hand stack materials appropriately, and follow instruction
- Load gaylords from pre-stage on the box tipper and introduce materials to belt
- Operate sort belt and box tipping equipment
- As materials run down the sort belt, hand-sort and remove desired materials dividing them up (sort/segregate) into labeled gaylords by type of material; upgrading whenever possible
- Allow all contaminates and undesired materials to dump into the overflow box at end of sort belt
· Label boxes of materials before putting material in boxes
- Break down gaylords, remove labels, separate and stack gaylords by quality “good or bad”
- Separate and stack skids by quality “good or bad” and sizes
- Maintain efficiency, performance, and quality standards of production. Achieve expected production requirements while maintaining Core Values and Safety Standards
- Maintain a clean, safe, organized working environment throughout the shift; keep equipment in a clean and orderly condition; removing any hazards from the area
- Maintain records and reports; ensure daily checklist is completed
- May occasionally assist by operating forklift (if certified) to bring additional materials
- Work closely with production team to meet and or exceed customer's expectations
- Report equipment maintenance issues to Sort Cell Lead and/or complete a work order requesting repair
- Complete all other duties as the Supervisor deems necessary

Knowledge, or Aptitude and Willingness to Learn or obtain:
-Prior plastics identification experiences is a plus.
-Plastics 101 and 103(provided by Bata)
-Hand Tool training (provided by Bata)
Hilo Experience preferred 1-2 years

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for prolonged periods of time; continually use hands to finger, handle, and grab; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk; climb, stoop and crouch; talk; and hear. The employee must lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required for this job includes the ability to visually identify product not meeting quality, OSHA or machine standards.
· Use hands to operate equipment, tools, write, finger, handle, feel, reach with both hand and arm, and talk and hear. As needed, walk all areas of the plant from department to department. Physical demands are consistent for those found in a warehouse and production environment.
· Noise level is moderate to heavy and typical of a warehouse and production environment for the Plastics Recycling industry.
· Overtime, over 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week will be required as necessary. Including the need to work as needed on various shifts and unscheduled days.
· Temperature fluctuations throughout the different seasons.
