JOB SUMMARY: The Global Sourcing Associate sources mission, vision and values aligned ingredients for Gaia Herbs. With guidance from the Global Sourcing Lead, this role identifies and executes projects related to the sustainability, organization and resiliency of Gaia's supply chain.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Executes setting up new suppliers/ingredients, supplier/ingredient documentation, documentation renewal life cycle, and other administrative duties in Gaia's document control software.
  • Submits ingredient samples to quality control (QC) laboratory and maintains sample log. 
  • Collects pertinent supplier documentation in collaboration with the Global Sourcing Lead to onboard new suppliers for current and new ingredients. 
  • Assists the Global Sourcing Lead in working collaboratively with quality assurance (QA), QC laboratory, and suppliers to identify and resolve testing method or specification data to ensure supply continuity.
  • Participates in fair-trade recertification processes with Global Sourcing Lead.
  • Participates in special projects, such as wild crafted herbs, fair-trade product labeling, and B Corp sustainability metrics, that directly impact the sustainability and social aspects of Gaia's supply chain. 
  • As a member of the New Product Development Team, provides updates on the status of new ingredients in project management software /tools.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert regarding raw material knowledge and supplier paperwork for the procurement team to help manage suppliers. 
  • Communicates new ingredient, product or supplier details to Procurement and Farm teams. 
  • Assists in mitigating risk of issues with ingredient availability by researching and identifying secondary growing regions and/or sources.
  • Participates in activities that build natural product industry ingredient knowledge. 
  • Participates in sustainability initiatives with the Sustainability department on short and long-term risk of ingredients in new and existing products. 
  • Supports collaborative projects regarding ingredient and supplier content for marketing and sustainability departments, which may include data and photos from suppliers.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:


Education & Experience:

Undergraduate Degree in Food Science, Chemistry, Biology, Supply Chain, or another related field would support success, but is not required. 

Three (3) years of experience in Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG), Food Science, Supply Chain or Herbalism preferred.

Familiarity with natural product chemistry and testing methods is a plus.

Knowledge of ERP systems is a plus.

Experience in dietary supplement manufacturing from an operational, marketing, sales, formulary, or clinical use perspective is a plus as it provides strong technical understanding of herbal ingredients. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Strong ability to read, understand, and organize technical documents such as vendor Certificates of Analysis (COA) and internal specification sheets.

Intermediate knowledge of the qualities and effects of medicinal herbs.

Ability to effectively prioritize and deliver quality results in a fast-paced environment. 

Ability to work collaboratively and purposefully across departments.

Able to relate technical data to botanical formula outcomes. 

Ability to leverage data to influence and optimize team decision making.

Ability to pivot with rapidly changing priorities and formulary direction.

Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to reach resolution individually and collaboratively. 

General computer proficiency and technical aptitude in Microsoft Office. Additional experience using MasterControl, Adobe Work Front, and/or IFS preferred

Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.   

Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret graphs.  

Ability to accurately convert from metric system to US customary units, and reverse.

Basic project management skills.

Understanding of quality systems including GMP 21 CRF Part 111 / DSHEA.

Work Environment:

The primary work environment of this position is a standard office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually low. Domestic travel is required up to two weeks per year.
