General Information:
The Advising Assistant is a key member of the Global Ambassador program. Global Ambassadors are study abroad returnees and student leaders who support the work of the Study Abroad unit within the Center for Global Engagement. In this paid position, you'll work in a supportive team environment, develop professional skills, and inform prospective students on how to have a transformative experience abroad.
The position is for a one-year academic term, beginning Fall 2024 and concluding at the end of the Spring 2025 semester.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Holds regular office hours weekly to be available for peer advising sessions, both drop-in and scheduled.
• Leads 30-45 minute info sessions, scheduled at regular intervals (either weekly or bi-weekly).
• Monitors the Study Abroad inbox to answer commonly asked questions.
• Assists with minor website updates and edits.
• Helps coordinate advising events and other campus outreach activities.
• Works in partnership with the Global Dukes Assistant to ensure tabling opportunities are fully staffed with student volunteers (Global Dukes).
• Works Study Abroad events like the Study Abroad Fair, Family Weekend Brunch and Taste of Study Abroad, among others.
• Trains Global Dukes on advising best practices.
• Attends twice-monthly Global Ambassadors meetings, and once monthly Global Duke meetings.
• Assists with special projects as assigned, under the direction of the Study Abroad Advisor.
Qualifications:
• Availability to work 4 hours per week between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and to attend regular team meetings, trainings, and evening programming during the academic year.
• Must have completed a study abroad program (JMU Semester, JMU Short-term, Study @, Exchange or External) prior to start date. Preference is given to students who have studied abroad on more than one program.
• Students must be available to attend an in-person mandatory orientation from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on August 19th and 20th, 2024, prior to the start of classes.
Conditions of Employment:
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
Students must have a 2.0 or better cumulative GPA.
