General Job Description:
The Texas General Land Office primarily serves the school children, veterans, and the environment of Texas. The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources. This position is with our Office of Communications and Governmental Relations Department.
Performs highly complex (senior-level) informational and communications work. Work involves coordinating the research, writing, editing, and production of content and materials for release to various communications media (news, print, digital, and/or social media) and for use by the agency, the general public, and other agencies. May supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Duties:
- Assists with preparation of speeches, talking points, fact sheets, written media, or scripts for the agency. Reviews and edits speeches, briefings and presentations written by other to ensure synchronization of message.
- Conducts interviews and research sources and ensures the completeness and accuracy of printed and online materials.
- Coordinates the preparation and distribution of organizational publications, news and informational releases, and educational scripts.
- May develop or assist with developing strategies and tools to improve social media presence.
- Designs and directs public information and public education campaigns related to agency services.
- Assists in marketing programs to community and professional groups to coordinate, improve, and stimulate interest in agency programs.
- May coordinate program information programs, conferences, seminars, workshops, and public hearings.
- May monitor content on social media sites and/or prepare content for posting, such as broadcast messages, and may prepare general comments.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of agency functions, policies, and procedures; of news and communication media; of various social media platforms; of editing and preparing informational material; of copy layout; and of publishing and broadcast industries.
Skill in editorial and design concepts and practices, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.
Ability to research and prepare information, to design communication plans and materials related to the goals and priorities of the agency, to compose usable content for the Web and social media, to prepare copy and scripts, to design broad communications plans and materials, to communicate effectively, and to provide guidance to others.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in journalism, public relations, advertising, communications, or a related field plus four years of experience in journalism, public relations, public information, communications, or media relations work. With a minimum of two years experience with digital media work.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working in communications in state government or related field.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the work-site) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/ customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required. The individual must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time when commuting to and from assigned destination and when traveling on state business including fieldwork and training assignments.
