Job Description
Job Summary:
Provide expert level strategic and technical support of a highly specialized nature. The Principal Investigator solves complex technical problems and is responsible for providing technical direction to federal program management staff and program stakeholders to define project scope, identify resource requirements, identify strategic risks, and assess project feasibility relative to the mission of the Forest Service.

Compensation:
- Non-exempt
- Starting at $36 to $67 per hour (Equivalent to $80,000 to $135,000 per year)

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Strategic Problem Solving: Provide expert-level strategic problem-solving, defining comprehensive plans and strategies to achieve business goals related to geospatial projects. Identify innovative solutions to complex technical challenges.
- Technical Direction: Offer technical direction to federal program management staff and program stakeholders. Define project scope, resource requirements, strategic risks, and project feasibility in alignment with the mission of the Forest Service.
- Technical Proposal Development: Provide expert assistance in developing complex technical proposals, including detailed project plans, methodologies, and budgets. Collaborate with teams to craft comprehensive responses to Statements of Objectives, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
- Documentation and Publications: Demonstrate expertise in preparing various types of documents, including publications, technical reports, guidelines, strategic-level documents, assessments, and recommendations. Communicate complex technical information effectively to diverse audiences.
- Research Presentation: Present research findings and project results at meetings, conferences, and through peer-reviewed publications. Disseminate knowledge, share insights, and contribute to the broader geospatial and environmental science communities.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- Demonstrated ability to problem solve at a strategic level, defining set plans to achieve business goals.
- Demonstrated experience providing expert level assistance in developing complex technical proposals, managing geospatial project activities, and developing Performance Work Statements in response to a Statement of Objectives.
- Applies expertise and knowledge in supervision of project staff for work required by the project including remote sensing data collection, field data collection, image processing and preparation of final deliverables.
- Demonstrated expertise in preparing publications, technical reports, guidelines, strategic-level documents, assessment and recommendations documents, etc.
- Presents research and work results at meetings, conferences, and in peer-reviewed publications.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree related to geography, GIS, remote sensing, or physical / biological / environmental discipline, including emphasis or coursework in geospatial analysis and modeling, and twelve (12) years of relevant work experience.
OR
- Master's degree related to geography, GIS, remote sensing, or physical / biological / environmental discipline, including emphasis or coursework in geospatial analysis and modeling, and ten (10) years of relevant work experience.
OR
- PhD degree related to geography, GIS, remote sensing, or physical / biological / environmental discipline, including emphasis or coursework in geospatial analysis and modeling, and eight (8) years of relevant work experience.
Physical Requirements:
- May require occasional travel to physical locations.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- This job operates in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc.
