GIS Intern

The City of Monroe, Ohio has one full-time (30-40 hours per week) GIS internship position open during the Summer of 2024 (approximately from May 13, 2024 to August 16, 2024). This internship is oriented toward higher education students pursuing a degree in GIS or a related field, with in-class training or experience using the Esri ArcGIS platform. The intern will assist the GIS and Engineering Departments under Public Works with various tasks, including data update, data analysis, and map production using Esri ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online. The intern will be tasked with mapping city assets using a high-accuracy GNSS receiver and Field Maps for ArcGIS, and with GIS office work such as georeferencing, digitizing, data creation, editing, and light scripting. Ongoing initiatives in which the intern may be involved include EPA-mandated Lead Service Line validation, ADA curb ramp evaluation, traffic sign and guardrail inventory work, address data updates for NG-911 compliance, and ongoing GIS data administration in ArcGIS Online. The intern will also gain experience building interactive maps using ArcGIS Experience Builder and Dashboards for ArcGIS as well as reading construction plans & as-builts, learning water distribution and stormwater utility terminology and principles, and learning about how a local government deploys an enterprise GIS using ArcGIS Online as a platform. Additionally, the intern will serve as a visual observer (VO) for city UAV flights and learn how a local government utilizes unpiloted aerial vehicles in its operation and maintenance. This internship also grants the intern registration and virtual access to the Esri User Conference in July 2024.
The intern will assist the GIS and Engineering Departments under Public Works with various tasks, including:

Records Research
Applicants should possess knowledge of GIS principles and practices; working knowledge of GIS; familiarity with research techniques; and skill in the use of various basic software (word processing, databases, spreadsheets, etc.).
Must be currently enrolled in the second or third year in an undergraduate degree (or graduate) program in GIS, geography, environmental science, civil engineering, or a related field.
Knowledge of GIS fundamentals.
Intermediate knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, including editing and georeferencing; experience with Arcade expressions and/or Python preferred.
Experience using ArcGIS Online, including web maps, app builders, and StoryMaps.
Must have experience operating a smartphone, tablet, and computer for data entry, navigation, and photo documentation of sites.
Must have experience using the Windows operating system.
Possession of a state-issued driver's license and ability to operate a city vehicle is required.
Ability to demonstrate dexterity in use of the hands and feet, to lift 25 lbs. from one location to another, to dig, bend, lift, walk, see, speak, and drive a motor vehicle for an entire shift if necessary, and to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to follow city policies and procedures, including to wear personal protective equipment and/or clothing based on the job tasks of the day.
Some practical professional experience preferred.
