We're Environmental Defense Fund, a fast-paced nonprofit with a growing staff of more than 1,000 people in nearly 30 countries. We deliver game-changing solutions that cut climate pollution and strengthen people's ability to thrive despite the effects climate change is already having. We work wherever we can have the most impact, from local communities to top companies to governments worldwide, and even in space.
Our culture, values and commitment to diversity make EDF an exciting and meaningful place to work. Every job here makes a difference. Won't you join us?
Responsibilities
Program/Department Overview
The Office of the Chief Scientist (OCS) is the nexus of science at EDF, ensuring that the natural and social science that is the backbone for all EDF policy positions is based on the best available information. To be most effective in this role, the Office of the Chief Scientist provides programmatic support for all scientists at EDF and fosters relationships with scientists outside the organization. The OCS team works on projects across all of EDF's programs, translating natural and social science basic and applied research into actionable ideas for colleagues who are designing programs and projects.
Within OCS, the intern will work on a team supporting MethaneSAT, LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), in support of the launch of a high performance, purpose-built satellite-MethaneSAT-to map and measure oil and gas methane emissions worldwide, with the potential to assess emissions from the full range of man-made sources. The satellite will enable us to gather methane emissions data on a global scale and, with data from other sources, locate and quantify these emissions. Data from MethaneSAT will help EDF reduce methane emissions by 45% by 2025 and holds the potential to help reduce the temperature of our planet by as much as 0.5 degrees C by the end of the century. This could be the most impactful environmental project yet conceived.
Overall Function
EDF is seeking an intern with strong geospatial analytical and research skills to join our team supporting this major satellite mission to help advance the development of source attribution of methane emissions from the global oil and gas sector using Geospatial Data and analytics. The intern will work closely with EDF Scientists and Analysts as well as external partners from academia and industry to support the development, QA/QC, and data analytics of a global database of oil and gas infrastructure and their characteristics. The intern will report to the Senior Scientist, Global Methane.
Key Responsibilities
Tasks will include but are not limited to:
  • Find, integrate, and analyze disparate spatial data on oil and gas infrastructure and related methane emissions, including data reported by governments and companies, high-resolution satellite imagery, and Earth observation datasets.
  • Support the development and implementation of programmatic/automatic methods for database updates and quality assurance protocols, including but not limited to assessment of spatial accuracy, database completeness, and reliability of source information.
  • Contribute to rigorous Geospatial Data analytics and visualization of oil and gas methane emissions and infrastructure data, and prepare and present key results in weekly meetings.
  • Help develop reports, fact sheets, blog posts, and other materials for general and specific audiences on the topics of focus.
  • Participate in project calls with EDF and MethaneSAT staff and other internal/external partners, communicating project progress and results.
  • Participate in advancing EDF Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) goals in which people from all backgrounds and experiences feel connected, included, and empowered to address the environmental and organizational challenges in alignment with EDF values.

Qualifications
  • Must be enrolled in, or a recent graduate of, an undergraduate degree program specializing in Environmental Science and Engineering, Geography, Geospatial Information Science, Earth System Science, Petroleum Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science or a related discipline.
  • Coursework or work experience with GIS and GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS) strongly preferred.
  • Coursework or work experience in Geospatial Data Analysis and data visualization.
  • Experience with Python programming and using geospatial libraries is strongly preferred.
  • Interest or experience in methane science and policy, the oil and gas sector, and/or climate change.
  • Knowledge of oil and gas infrastructure a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and have the ability to work independently when projects are due.
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, cultural competency and inclusivity, and ability to work with colleagues and stakeholders across diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills.
