Job Description
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), a world-leading research and development laboratory for renewable energy technologies, is seeking to hire one or more research scientist(s) focused on geothermal science and geospatial analysis.
The researcher will work in geothermal projects, specifically focused on identifying and characterizing geothermal resources for heating and cooling (GHC), establishing baseline GHC data sets (e.g., spatial, and commercial deployment), and standardizing GHC definitions with respect to the geothermal resources.
In addition, this person may compile, analyze, and disseminate relevant data; or develop and apply methods to assess potential for low-temperature geothermal resources (e.g., Sedimentary Basin, Radiogenic, and Orogenic Play Types). Oil and Gas geothermal retrofit and co-production dataset compilation and analysis is an important task in this project to evaluate heat exchange and co-produced direct use.
Basic Qualifications
Relevant Master's Degree . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 2 or more years of experience . General knowledge and application of scientific technical standards, principles, theories, concepts and techniques. Training in team, task or project leadership responsibilities. Intermediate abilities and knowledge of practices and techniques. Beginning experience in project management. Good technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.

Additional Required Qualifications
Understanding and ability to communicate the potential of hydrothermal and enhanced geothermal system (EGS) resources and geothermal technologies in the United States.
Assisting with publication of analysis results in peer-reviewed publications and high-impact forums.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Geographic Information System (GIS), QGIS for visualizing and creating maps, Python or MATLAB for statistical analysis, Excel for data analysis.
  • Organization and analysis of data related to geothermal exploration, geothermal resource characterization, and geothermal utilization and markets.
  • Experience with geothermal modeling tools such as Leapfrog, TOUGH2, GEOPHIRES, etc.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher II / Annual Salary Range: $71,300 - $117,600
NREL takes into consideration a candidate's education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee's salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
