Job Description Summary:
This position will conduct original independent and collaborative research, model development, and numerical experimentation to support HAO's research objectives with a focus on addressing outstanding questions in aeronomy and space sciences, including the physics, chemistry, dynamics, and electrodynamics of the upper atmosphere.
Contribute to NCAR and HAO programs through leadership and participation in high-priority projects. Interact with scientists throughout NCAR, UCAR, and the university community on research related to the whole atmosphere and whole geospace coupling processes, space weather, and Sun-Climate interactions. Provide service to the community through external committees, editorships, reviews, education/outreach, professional society activities, communicating science to the public, professional development of staff/visitors, student mentoring, and diversity efforts. Communicates research results by publishing papers in scientific journals and by giving presentations at national and international meetings.
Performs numerical experiments in whole atmosphere and ionosphere-thermosphere models for both data assimilation and scientific investigations and publishes research findings at scientific meetings and in scientific journals.

What You Will Do
Here is a summary of what one would expect to be generally responsible for in this role.
Research and Model Development:
  • Conduct original, cutting-edge research in the field of aeronomy and space sciences.
  • Develop and refine models to enhance our understanding of the upper atmosphere.
  • Engage in numerical experimentation to investigate various phenomena within the Earth's upper atmosphere.
  • Serves as a Co-Investigator on grant proposals and collaborative projects.

Leadership and Collaboration:
  • Act as a leader in high-priority projects within NCAR and HAO.
  • Foster collaboration with scientists and researchers across NCAR, UCAR, and the wider university community.
  • Contribute to research related to the whole atmosphere and whole geospace coupling processes, space weather, and Sun-Climate interactions.

Community Engagement:
  • Provide valuable service to the scientific community by participating in external committees, editorial roles, and peer reviews.
  • Engage in educational and outreach activities to communicate scientific findings to a wider audience.
  • Actively participate in professional society activities related to aeronomy and space sciences.
  • Contribute to the professional development of staff, visitors, and students.
  • Support diversity and inclusion efforts within the organization.

Publication and Presentation:
  • Disseminate research findings by publishing papers in reputable scientific journals.
  • Present research results at national and international meetings, sharing insights with the scientific community.

Education and Experience REQUIRED:
  • Ph.D. in a relevant science; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities REQUIRED:
  • Demonstrated expertise in conducting independent and collaborative research in upper atmosphere physics and related fields.
  • Strong analytical and modeling skills.
  • Proven track record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Effective communication skills for both scientific and public audiences.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the scientific community.
  • Ability to work in a team and communicate effectively within said team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
