Job description

Brown and Caldwell's Denver office has a nice career opportunity for a self-motivated hydrogeologist or geochemist with 3-8 years of experience to join our local Private Sector Business Unit. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a growth-oriented professional consulting office with a diverse technical staff of geologists, engineers, and scientists. The selected candidate will work with and be mentored by strong, nationally recognized, senior staff working on a variety of environmental and water resources related projects.

Remote work is allowed although periodic 'field work' will be required. The ideal candidate will be located in Colorado, within driving distance to our team in the Denver metro and Front Range areas and corresponding field work. 

Detailed Description:

  • Provides geochemical or hydrogeological support on a variety of environmental services projects.
  • Conducts and manages field investigation activities, including installation of soil borings, monitoring well installations, collection of soil and water samples, installation of vapor probes and collection of vapor samples, and preparation of planning documents and investigation results reports.
  • Performs data collection and documentation related to field activities, including site investigation (soil and groundwater), sampling of surface water.
  • Office work may include the reduction of field data, construction of boring logs and geologic cross sections, analyses of pumping test data, groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport modeling, geochemical evaluation and modeling, preparation of maps using GIS tools, and report preparation.
  • Manage tasks and assignments to meet critical deadlines and budgets.
  • Communicate findings to senior staff and make recommendations as appropriate.
  • Draft technical memoranda, reports, and design documents.
  • Coordinate field efforts; adhere to and assist with the development of work plans and health and safety plans.

Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field required.
  • 3-8 years of professional experience.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, results-oriented, reliable, and able to work well with a wide variety of coworkers and subcontractors.
  • Candidates should have a strong desire and be motivated to obtain a Geologist-in-Training certification then Registered Professional Geologist licensure within 1-3 years or other appropriate professional engineering license/registration.
  • Excellent verbal communication and technical writing capabilities required.
  • Capable of working in a team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities.
  • Highly organized, reliable, and able to work well with others.
  • Must be proficient in using standard computer programs (i.e., MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, MS Outlook); experience with MS Project, MS Access, AutoCad, ArcGIS, and/or boring log software (e.g., gINT) required.
  • Experience with common geochemical modeling tools such as PHREEQ-C, Geochemist Workbench or OLI required.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Must be willing to work in the field, potentially for periods of time up to 2 weeks, and perform physically demanding work (see requirements below)
    • Field assignments require extensive travel year-round with overnight stay outside the Denver area, potentially for extended periods of time. Field assignments may also occur in the late evening, early morning hours.
    • Ability to work for short periods of time in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
    • Ability to wear required safety equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, etc.
    • Ability to operate a BC pickup truck to commute to jobsites and to access work areas on site.
    • Ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to clear an area where a potential hazard is identified.
    • Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24-foot typically) to access structures for visual inspection.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or related field.
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER certification is preferred but not required.
  • 24-hour MSHA certifications preferred but not required.
  • Experience with groundwater flow and transport modeling and preprocessing software such as MODFLOW 6, MT3D, Groundwater =Vistas, GMS, FloPy and PEST a plus.

Salary Range: The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education.  These ranges may be modified in the future. 

Location B:

Salary: $94,000 - $128,000
