Genomic Surveillance Specialist Epidemiologist

 

This position requires an active Secret clearance or the ability to obtain a   Secret clearance to be considered.

 

The Genomic Surveillance Specialist will support the GEIS Branch by coordinating and managing data generated from Genomic Surveillance of novel, and emerging respiratory pathogens like SARS-CoV-2. The Genomic Surveillance Specialist will assist in the coordination of whole genome sequencing activities across DoD laboratories, contributing to pandemic preparedness and response for infectious disease threats to the Military Health System and Force. This role will also support decision-makers by generating routine reports and other products resulting from surveillance activities with GEIS partners around the world.

 

Compensation & Benefits:

Estimated Starting Salary Range for Genomic Surveillance Specialist Epidemiologist: $95,000 to $105,000.  Pay commensurate with experience.

Full time benefits include Medical, Dental, Vision, 401K, and other possible benefits as provided.  Benefits are subject to change with or without notice.

 

Genomic Surveillance Specialist Epidemiologist Responsibilities Include: 

  • Request, collect, and manage Genomic Surveillance data generated by GEIS-funded laboratories across the continental United States (CONUS) and outside of the continental U.S. (OCONUS).
  • Merge, clean, and analyze data generated from Genomic Surveillance activities and maintain database with aggregated Genomic Surveillance data on SARS-CoV-2 and other viral and bacterial respiratory pathogens for subsequent analyses.
  • Generate reports with summary statistics, tables, and other visualizations to translate Genomic Surveillance data into informational products for technical and non-technical audiences and decision-makers.
  • Create talking points, tables, figures, maps, slides for presentations and publications with minimal oversight. 
  • Track and respond to internal and external requests for information.
  • Support the Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Bioinformatics (BI) Consortium (NGSBC) through coordination of genomic sequencing initiatives across the GEIS network of laboratories.
  • Coordinate with GEIS Science Advisor and Senior Molecular Epidemiologist to strategize and operationalize infectious disease genomics initiatives.
  • Support GEIS partners during the development of manuscripts and reports for DoD stakeholders and peer-reviewed publications. 
  • Support the GEIS Focus Areas through proposal evaluation and consultation on feasibility and scientific relevance of proposed Genomic Surveillance activities. 
  • Maintain awareness of Genomic Surveillance policies and literature external to AFHSD, such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization.
  • Provide programmatic support as requested by GEIS Program Manager, to include reviewing and revising documents and other deliverables.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

 

Genomic Surveillance Specialist Epidemiologist Experience, Education, Skills, Abilities requested: 

  • Master's degree (MPH, MSPH, MSc, or related degree) or Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, or related degree) with a minimum 5 years of experience in data management, research, or public health setting required.
  • Experience supporting Federal clients, particularly DoD, preferred.
  • Experience with DoD CONUS and OCONUS laboratories preferred.
  • Experience in next generation sequencing and bioinformatics, including familiarity with whole genome sequencing platforms (i.e. MiSeq, NextSeq, MinION) preferred.
  • Familiarity with the SPHERES Consortium, genomic epidemiology programs such as Nextstrain, and genomic data repositories such as GISAID, Genbank, and SRA preferred.
  • Strong skills and experience with data management, programming, and analysis tools (e.g., MS Excel, SAS, and R/R Studio) required.
  • Skills and experience with mapping and visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, ArcGIS, Power BI) preferred.
  • Understanding of genomic data generation and basic analysis and experience with managing genomic and epidemiological metadata highly desired.
  • Excellent organizational skills and strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to lead projects and initiatives to provide data-related solutions.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing or evolving needs.
  • Ability to collaborate in fast-paced, team environment.
  • Position will be a hybrid work environment with a mixture of telework and in-person work in a climate-controlled office setting.
