BRIEF POSTING DESCRIPTION:

The P ER POWER SUPPLY CONTROLS Department of the P OPERATIONAL TECHNOLOGY Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

 

JOB FUNCTION:

Provides specialized expertise, skills and technical support for the operation and on-going assessment, support, improvement, and extension of the capabilities of the Distributed Control System (DCS). Required to ensure adequate support in meeting corporate goals in service reliability, availability, and system efficiencies. Identifies, designs, implements, tests, and integrates software which enhances and supports the needs of the DCS and its users. Responsible for planning, coordinating, installing, maintaining, optimizing, and enhancing the data communication (secure DCS network) and corporate telecommunication networks and security interfaces.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintains operating system, application software, modeling and full graphic displays, application code and databases for the DCS system. Provides 24x7 support to Electric System Operations personnel in the safe and timely operation of the Transmission, Distribution and Generation control systems. Maintains both the Primary and Back Up DCS systems.
  • Performs LAN administrator functions and plans, researches and directs the installation, configuration, maintenance, operation and optimization of the data communication and telecommunication networks.  
  • Assists the technical personnel in the isolation, identification, and resolution of problems with the DCS hardware, helping to develop specialized test software and procedures as indicated. Establishes and administers contracts for hardware maintenance support.
  • Provides technological expertise, support and maintenance of security functions and procedures regarding DCS applications. Ensures compliance with Corporate security policies and documentation of exceptions.
  • Performs hardware, operating system and software product installation, updates, and integration into the DCS.
  • Investigates and evaluates technological advances in computer architecture, hardware, and software, proposes necessary improvements to insure DCS availability, reliability, and cost effectiveness. Assist in the procurement process of new systems and equipment (development of specifications, bid packages, evaluation of bids, and selection).  
  • Makes database and display changes whenever applicable generation changes are made. Support testing of any changes.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • Working knowledge in the management of computerized information and control systems, as needed for configuration and support of operating technology systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of client-server and workstation technologies and system development.  
  • Thorough knowledge of data and telecommunications hardware, software, including supported software and network configurations.
  • Working knowledge of various operating systems including but not limited to Windows, UNIX, VM/CMS, MVS and CICS.
  • Understanding of constraints and challenges for supporting 24/7 operations.
  • Working knowledge of network operating systems (i.e., Windows Server).
  • Working knowledge of Networking Systems and data communications concepts and operation.
  • Working knowledge of RTU protocols & configurations including L&G 8979 & DNP3.0. Knowledge of Wonder-ware and MODBUS/MODBUS+ is desirable.

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver's license.  Must meet the standards for frequent required driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Required Driving Positions policy.

 

Experience Requirements

  • College degree in computer science or electrical engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Several years (3-5) of experience with data and communications hardware and network installation, administration and troubleshooting with experience in Operating Technology Systems (OTS) preferred.
  • Several years (3-4) experience with workstation and server hardware and software installation, configuration, and maintenance.

Hiring Range: The hiring range for the GENERATION CONTROLS ENGINEER [Req ID 8341] position is 94,100.00 to 120,100.00. The person selected will be placed according to his/her skills and qualifications.
