Form of workThe University of Virginia’s College at Wise is seeking candidates for a General Trades Assistant. This position supports the work of the senior HVAC technician and senior electricians while learning on the job. Training is varied and may consist of rotations throughout the department to provide a broad range of skills. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, moving, installing, demolition, event setup, basic cleaning or clearing, and signage. They may have experience with several unlicensed trades. They may work independently or as a team, with assigned work but limited supervision and have a willingness to take direction.
Assist senior HVAC technician in performing routine system maintenance, preventative maintenance, equipment repairs, assessing problems, undertaking corrective actions, and site cleanup. Assist senior electricians with basic electrical systems installation, repair and maintenance. A Trades assistant is to execute more routine tasks of the electrical trade while taking directions from or under the supervision of the senior electrician. Respond to emergency calls, including nights and weekends, as needed. Communicate with campus departments regarding the status of work orders, providing additional support and problem solving, as needed. Assist with snow removal. Have a basic knowledge of hand tools and power tools. Perform all work in accordance with safety rules, policies and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations. Develop an increasing familiarity with the skills and best practices of the assigned trade. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties maybe assigned. Employee will be required to crawl, kneel, bend, twist, and climb ladders in order to perform their work. Employee will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: HVAC and Electrical experience preferred; but not required.
Licensure: Not required.
