Summary
The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in Smithsonian Institution's Office of Smithsonian Facilities (SF), Office of Facilities Management and Reliability (OFMR). The Office of Facilities Management and Reliability provides the full range of building services through maintenance and operational zones.

Clarification from the agency
This Merit Promotion position is open to Current Federal Employees and Former Federal Employees with permanent status or reinstatement eligibility. Duties
The General Maintenance & Operations Supervisor is responsible for supervising subordinates in various trades (electricians, General Maintenance workers, masons, painters, pipefitters, machinists, welders, etc.) depending on the Craft Shop.
In this position, you will:
  • Set objectives and priorities; plans the best use of subordinates, equipment and materials; makes assignments of work and establishes deadlines; inspects completed work and work in progress.
  • Participate with and advises the Building Manager on long-range planning, budgeting, staffing determinations, etc. Reports to supervisor on status of work and causes of work delays or problems and recommends solutions/alternative approaches.
  • Identify situations, both within and outside the Shop, which offer the Smithsonian opportunities to increase productivity and reduce costs. Such situations may include skills realignment, cost estimates, equipment acquisition, income-producing possibilities, inventory management, materials management and customer relations.
  • Maintain close contact with customers, responds promptly to their inquiries and checks periodically with them to determine their degree of satisfaction with the quality of work being performed. Meets with customers at the conclusion of projects to determine degree of satisfaction with the finished product and the processes that interface with customers.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires the physical ability to perform moderately heavy work including lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 50 lbs.; work outside in all weather conditions with exposure to dirt, dust, pollen and insects; climb ladders and stairs; and stand and walk for extended periods.

Qualifications

How You Will Be Evaluated
You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  1. Ability to supervise a full range of operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair services associated with painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical operations.

If an applicant meets the screen-out element, the following Job Elements will be evaluated:
  1. Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, operations, repair, and maintenance (painting, carpentry, plumbing, or electrical.)
  2. Knowledge of technical practices associated with painting, carpentry, plumbing and electrical operations.
  3. Ability to use measuring instruments associated with painting, carpentry, plumbing or electrical work.
  4. Knowledge of interpreting instructions, specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading).
  5. Skills in using and maintaining tools and equipment used to perform minor repairs and maintenance.
  6. Knowledge of materials used to perform the following maintenance tasks, painting, plumbing, electrical or carpentry work.
