Chief Purpose of this position: The Department of Chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) invites applications for a non-tenure track 12-month position in Chemistry at the Assistant Professor level to help
revitalize and design a new General Chemistry Laboratory experience focused on student-centered
learning in VCU's new, state-of-the-art STEM building, designed to encourage collaboration and
community in the students' foundational lab work. This is a term appointment, which is renewable,
to begin in August 2024.
Position Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities will include the development, management,
supervision, and instruction of the General Chemistry teaching laboratories and the instruction of
the associated General Chemistry courses.
Required Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, experience teaching at the undergraduate level, and a commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds while fostering a supportive
and inclusive learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred candidates should have deep knowledge of
pedagogical best practices and an ongoing commitment to developing and maintaining knowledge
in this area. The Laboratory Coordinator collaborates with faculty in developing the lab curriculum
to complement the learning goals of the General Chemistry courses, oversees the planning,
development, and implementation of policies, procedures, and action plans for labs including
safety protocols and technological advancements as appropriate; and oversees and provides
instructional support and training of Teaching Assistants.
This position brings numerous opportunities for training undergraduate and graduate students,
working on students' independent research projects, and engaging with research faculty with a
state-of-the-art instrumentation facility. Richmond is a fantastic place to live with many cultural
events taking place throughout the year including the Richmond Folk Festival and RVA Street
Festival as well as great restaurants to indulge your culinary tastes. The position is at the level of
an assistant professor, and there are university-wide procedures in place for faculty promotion to
associate and then full professor. Our salaries are competitive. Chemists with applied industrial
or government experience are also encouraged to apply.

Chemistry degrees (2nd among non-HBCUs), 5th for women BS Chemistry degrees, and 9th for
the total number of BS Chemistry degrees among 1137 Colleges and Universities in the USA.
