Job description

The TWA Flight 800 Assistant Manager Level 1 is responsible for assisting with the maintenance of the grounds at the Flight 800 Memorial at Smith Point Park.

Sunday - Thursday 8a-4p

Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Assistant Manager Level 1 is responsible for the day to day operation of the memorial site.
  • Conducts grounds maintenance at the TWA Flight 800 International Memorial at Smith Point County Park which includes, but is not limited to the following:

Spring/Summer

  • Physically walks the memorial each morning to inspect for vandalism and deer damage. Checks the entire memorial to ensure that there is no sign of environmental damage. De-winterizes the memorial and prepares the site for springtime operations. Completes Spring/Summer Site Preparation Checklist.
  • Assists the Assistant Manager Level 2 with managing and coordinating volunteer and seasonal employee efforts (IGHL Day Habilitation participants, Red Cross workers, family and community members) to ensure that there is an adequate amount of manpower to complete daily tasks.
  • Completes all daily and weekly checklists.
  • Ensures the memorial interior, including walkways, is free from dirt and sand.
  • Ensures all litter is removed from the memorial on a daily basis.
  • Tests the memorial irrigation systems, including county park areas, every Monday to ensure each sprinkler head and zone are working properly. Repairs, adjusts and/or replaces sprinkler heads as necessary.
  • Assists with maintaining all equipment used at the memorial.
  • Ensures adequate equipment is on hand to perform required maintenance.
  • Develops and maintains a thorough knowledge of all plant material used in the memorial and surrounding area.
  • Directs work crews to prepare equipment, tools and supplies for each workday. Organizes job assignments and ensures work is completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Assists with designating break and lunch times for work crews.
  • Assists with ensuring all time sheets are correct and accurately reflect time worked on the memorial.
  • Ensures all equipment is properly secure in the shed at the end of each day.
  • Ensures that the memorial is properly weeded at all times.
  • Ensures that an adequate amount of approved type of mulch is used throughout the memorial gardens.
  • Ensures the memorial lighting system is properly working and replace lamps as needed. Ensures fixtures remain free from moisture. Tests the lighting system weekly.
  • Checks all drains on a weekly basis to ensure they are free from debris, sand and dirt.
  • Replaces memorial flags as needed.

Fall

  • Continue to complete springtime functions
  • Completes weeding and prepares to install burlap to designated areas.
  • Continues to deer spray and monitor site for deer damage.
  • Prunes and cuts back all perennials.
  • Installs deer fence and prepares the site for winter.

Winter

  • Physically walks the memorial each morning to inspect for vandalism and deer damage. Checks the entire memorial to ensure that there is no sign of environmental damage.
  • Monday- Applies garlic spray and ensures that the burlap and deer fence are intact.
  • Tuesday- Removes sand and debris from the memorial walkways and inner space.
  • Wednesday- Checks brochure holder and adds brochures as necessary. Tests the entire electrical system to ensure that all fixtures are operating properly. Replaces lamps as needed. Sprays anti-desiccants.
  • Thursday- Checks all drains for sand sand/or debris blockage. Removes sand and/or debris as needed. Ensures that the Rosa Ragusa and Junipers are not covered by sand.
  • Friday- Removes any trash from the memorial. Checks the security camera to ensure it is working properly. Notifies Parks Department and Family Liaison immediately if the camera is not functioning properly. Reviews the entire weeks work and checklist with the Family Liaison.
  • All other duties assigned.

Position Requirements and Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • Valid NYS driver’s license
  • Experience in planting, pruning and tree and shrub removal
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds
