SalaryThe Ventura Botanical Gardens is seeking a qualified self-starting individual for this paid outdoor position reporting to the gardens' horticulture director.
Position will work alongside fellow staff, volunteers, and student interns. General duties include, but are not limited to:
- Weeding, mulching, pruning, planting, and other activities
- Operating and maintaining outdoor power equipment and hand tools
- Watering plants and assisting with other irrigation activities
- Applying fertilizers, pesticides, and other products
- Helping with other general landscape and maintenance activities, in addition to special projects (e.g., set up events, help guests, etc.)
Required Skills and Abilities
- Work independently and in a group with VBG teammates, volunteers, and interns
- Safely operate hand tools and power equipment, including golf carts
- Perform heavy, physical labor (lift 50+ lbs.)
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Ability to work on steep slopes
- Willingness to learn pest management
- Must be 21+ years old, of legal working status, and hold a valid driver’s license
Desired Skills and Abilities
- Management of volunteers and interns, required for associate position
- An understanding of public garden standards and an eye for detail
- University degree in horticulture, agriculture, or related field
Pay & Benefits
- $19.50 to $23 per hour starting wage with review after 60 days of employment
- Paid holidays in line with federal standard
- One week of paid time off (PTO) upon hire with additional PTO accrued over time
- Ability to utilize the VBG 401k program
Schedule: 32 hours/week, Monday-Thursday, 8:30 am - 5:30 pm
