Position Summary
The Garden Intern position is designed for people who seek a valuable learning experience working in public historic heirloom gardens. The Garden Intern's work is led by the Landscapes and Gardens Coordinator and supervised by the Director of Operations. They collaborate to help create high quality immersive outdoor experiences for site guests in alignment with the Mission of Old World Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Historical Society.
Interns can learn about historic gardening methods, heirloom plants, native Wisconsin flora and fauna, Wisconsin history and more. Interns will learn by performing regular outdoor horticulture maintenance duties including planting, watering, weeding, pruning, harvesting, and more. This work involves physical labor, exposure to adverse weather conditions (particularly heat and humidity), dirt, dust, and insects (including biting and stinging).
The Garden Intern should possess basic knowledge of horticulture and be eager to learn more about gardening, safety, and use of tools. Excellent communication is needed to engage with staff and volunteers to collaboratively support the historic gardens and guest experience.
A special project may be added to an intern's regular duties to practice project management skills needed to see a project through from start to finish.
Duties:
  • Engage in actively learning more about historic gardening including learning plant names, growing practices, ethnic connections, and more as appropriate.
  • Assist with proper daily care and cultivation of gardens including weeding, watering, deadheading, transplanting, pruning and more as directed.
  • Routinely monitor public and work areas for safety, cleanliness, and comfort.
  • Maintain a positive, welcoming, and helpful attitude at all times with staff, volunteers, and the public.
  • Participate in training and professional development learning experiences as directed and selected.
  • Demonstrate and share knowledge with guests about historic and ethnic gardening facts and practices in collaboration with the Guest Experience team.

Salary Information
Pay is $15.00 per hour. This classification is in schedule and class 03-09. Night and weekend differential is 80 cents per hour.
Please note this is a Limited Term Employment position so it does not include paid time off or benefits upon hire.
Job Details
A criminal background check will be conducted by WHS prior to an offer of employment to determine if the circumstances of any conviction may be related to the job.
This is a Limited Term Employment (LTE) position and limited to 1,039 hours. This position will be part time and average 32 hours per week.
Wisconsin residency is required for Limited Term Employment positions.
Limited Term Employment (LTE) positions are not civil service classified positions, do not give any rights to permanent civil service classified positions and do not lead to permanent status.
WHS does not sponsor work visas. Any appointment made will be contingent on the applicant being able to prove valid status to work in the United States.
Qualifications
  • Some basic knowledge of plant care and horticulture
  • Some experience interacting with the public
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to think on one's feet and exhibit flexibility while ensuring exceptional guest experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff, guests, and volunteers of diverse backgrounds and interests
  • Ability to support peers to achieve success through teamwork
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
  • Ability to carry out assigned duties with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to sufficiently and safely perform manual labor including bending, squatting, kneeling, standing and walking for extended periods while working in an outdoor environment occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to use typical gardening hand tools (Shovel, rake, hoe, hammer, etc.)
This is a seasonal summer position. 24 - 32 hours per week.
