External Description
The Gallery Monitor is a paid work-study position at DePauw University that offers an
exciting opportunity to actively engage in the art gallery environment and contribute to
its successful operation. This role involves providing support during gallery hours,
ensuring a welcoming and secure atmosphere for visitors, and assisting with various
gallery activities under the guidance of the Gallery Staff and Lead Gallery Monitor.
Responsibilities:
Visitor Engagement:
• Greet visitors and provide information about ongoing exhibitions, artists, and
artworks on display.
• Foster a positive and welcoming environment for gallery visitors, answering
questions and engaging in meaningful conversations about the art.
Gallery Monitoring:
• Maintain a vigilant presence in gallery spaces during open hours, ensuring that
artworks are respected and gallery guidelines are followed.
• Assist visitors in navigating the gallery, providing insights into the layout and
significance of exhibited artworks.
Assistance with Setup:
• Collaborate with the Lead Gallery Monitor and gallery staff to help set up
exhibition spaces and prepare for gallery events as needed.
• Assist in hanging artworks, arranging exhibition materials, and ensuring proper
lighting as needed.
Guidance and Education:
• Educate visitors about gallery policies, proper conduct, and guidelines for
interacting with artworks.
• Assist in facilitating gallery tours, workshops, and educational activities as
required.
Documentation and Reporting:
• Keep a record of visitor interactions, noting inquiries and feedback for the
purpose of improving gallery experiences.
• Report any incidents, concerns, or issues to the Student Gallery Monitor
Manager or appropriate gallery staff.
Gallery Etiquette:
• Enforce gallery rules and guidelines to ensure the safety and preservation of
exhibited artworks.
• Be attentive to the behavior of visitors and intervene if necessary to prevent any
damage or disruptions.
Qualifications:
• Enthusiasm for visual arts and interest in engaging with art exhibitions.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to interact courteously with diverse
visitors.
• Responsibility and punctuality in adhering to assigned gallery hours.
• Attention to detail and the ability to follow gallery policies and procedures.
• Reliability in carrying out Gallery Monitoring duties.

Second Year:
• Exhibition Support: Gain more involvement in preparing and arranging artworks
for exhibitions and gallery events.
• Visitor Engagement Leadership: Lead gallery tours and discussions, enhancing
your ability to engage with visitors.
Third Year:
• Educational Outreach: Collaborate with gallery staff on planning and executing
gallery workshops, talks, and educational activities.
• Exhibition Assistance: Gain insight into curatorial practices by assisting in the
setup and documentation of exhibitions.
Fourth Year:
• Gallery Promotion: Participate in promoting gallery exhibitions through social
media, campus events, and outreach initiatives.
• Mentorship: Serve as a mentor to junior Gallery Monitors, providing guidance and
support to help them excel in their roles.
Additional Skills to Gain:
• Public Speaking: Develop public speaking skills through gallery tours,
discussions, and educational activities.
• Interpretive Writing: Enhance your ability to write about artworks, exhibitions, and
artists for gallery materials.
• Event Coordination: Learn to assist in planning and coordinating gallery events,
receptions, and artist talks.
• Networking: Build connections with art professionals, visiting artists, and alumni
to explore post-graduation opportunities in the art world.
