Job Summary

The Galleries Director is responsible for overseeing strategy, budgeting, planning, promotion and operations of Overture Center’s visual arts galleries and visual arts engagement. Work involves considerable public contact with diverse artists and audiences, including building key community relationships and partnerships. In addition, this position will plan and coordinate other education and community programs and events for Overture Center.

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees curation for the four Overture visual art galleries and other special galleries including the Rotunda Gallery. Works with committee to establish the annual season and implements gallery exhibitions and special projects.
  • Develops annual plans, budget, and strategy for the galleries and additional programs including plans for promotion, marketing, and social media. Actively collaborates with other departments and directors in the programming team to coordinate planning and execution.
  • Coordinates and manages all aspects of gallery operations including artistic and content development, budget development & management, artist contracting & management, installs & de-installs, logistical event execution, gallery monitoring, evaluating, gallery sales and reporting.
  • Develops, establishes, and maintains community relationships and communications with/between teachers, social service staff, community arts organizations and artists, providing necessary feedback for the continued improvement of Overture Center programs.
  • Serves as a contributing member of the Overture Center Artistic Experiences team.
  • Supervises the Gallery Assistant
  • Embraces and participates in the advancement of the JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion) mission and vision of the organization.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required to successfully perform this job.

 

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and/or related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in visual arts, art education, education, performing or visual arts, or related fields preferred.
  • 5-7 years’ experience involving the planning, selecting, promoting, coordinating, art installation & handling, as well as the content development of visual arts programs in an arts center, public facility or community organization. Additionally, curatorial experience strongly preferred.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of planning, administrating, negotiating, and evaluating principles, techniques, and methods applicable to visual arts programming.
  • Working knowledge of visual art aesthetics and installation, including art handling and display of a variety of media and materials.
  • Working knowledge of the performing and visual arts as they relate to education, community involvement, and audience engagement.
  • Working knowledge of advertising, promotional & public relations theories, techniques, practices, and procedures.
  • General knowledge of the tools, equipment, and services applicable to the entertainment and meeting service industries.
  • Effective interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills to include public speaking.
  • Ability to operate a computer and use word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
  • Ability to interpret, explain, and apply facility and program regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to write and edit copy for print and electronic mediums.

  • Primarily perform work in an office environment
  • Ability to sit or stand for up to 8 hours per day.
  • Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and telephone.
