FY25 School Police Officer (SPO)
Description Qualifications/Responsibilities:
- To protect and serve the students and employees of the Chattahoochee County School District and enforce the laws of the State of Georgia;
- The SPO shall be a POST-certified officer and shall have all arrest powers granted to school Security officers by Georgia law;
- The SPO shall perform scheduled and non-scheduled visits to all schools and facilities within the School District in order to promote safety and security.
- The SPO shall provide investigative assistance and security advice to the principals of each school within the School District, and shall promote a positive and cooperative working environment between the employees of the School District and local law enforcement entities.
- The SPO shall possess the following qualifications and qualities: Be a P.O.S.T. certified officer with at least ten years' comparable experience as a law enforcement official and/or military background, with preference given to military experience
- Attend SPO training at the earliest opportunity to become state certified to carry out the duties of an SPO.
- SPOs shall attend an annual 20 hour refresher course and receive specialized training in relevant topics.
- Be able to demonstrate effective writing and verbal communication skills and shall have strong public speaking skills.
- SPOs shall maintain detailed records and reports on all operations of the Program.
- Enjoy working with young people and shall be able to establish an appropriate and professional working relationship with school officials, faculty, staff and students through a community policing approach.
- Present a neat and professional appearance.
- Be willing to work flexible hours to attend extra-curricular activities and must have a positive attitude toward continuing education and be willing to attend all necessary training to retain certification and keep current on school issues.
- In addition to performing general law-enforcement duties, SPOs shall act as instructors for specialized law enforcement related presentations upon the request of the school principal.
- SPOs shall maintain a high standard of professional conduct in their dealings with administrators, staff, students, parents and community members.
- SPOs shall work under limited supervision displaying the highest degree of honesty, integrity and work ethic.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities:
- SPOs shall comply with all applicable federal and state laws, School Board policies and procedures, school rules and standards governing law enforcement in carrying out their duties
- and responsibilities for maintaining order in the schools.
- SPOs shall be a liaison between the school system and area law enforcement agencies and courts.
- SPOs must maintain visibility in the schools in order to help prevent crimes and other disruptive behavior as well as maintain a proactive, visible community policing approach.
- SPOs shall make themselves available for conferences with students, parents and faculty members in order to assist with problems relating to law enforcement, crime prevention and safety;
- SPOs will assist in coordinating and implementing the school safety plan in order to provide for all possible school emergencies;
- SPOs shall assist school principals in coordinating security and safety to all after-school events, including athletic events. The SPO shall attend both home and away sporting events, school dances, PTA meetings, School Board meetings and any other extracurricular event.
- SPOs shall be responsible for investigating all crimes committed on or against school property or during school activities, at all times regardless of whether school is in session or not.
- SPOs shall serve as a classroom resource for instruction in the following areas: safety programs, law-related education, life skills, conflict resolution, gang resistance, and other programs dealing with law and drug awareness.
