FACULTY POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT

FY25 - ENGINEERING INSTRUCTOR

FULL-TIME, TENURE-TRACK C BASIS

Located on about 426 acres in the West San Fernando Valley, Los Angeles Pierce College (LAPC) combines state-of-the-art technology and learning with the picturesque beauty of its rolling hills. Founded in 1947, LAPC is a growing two-year public institution with more than 100 disciplines being taught to more than 20,000 students each semester and enjoys one of the highest transfer performances in Southern California. The college offers courses designed to prepare students for transfer to university, courses that meet general education requirements for transfer, and career education (CE) courses for students pursuing a certificate, degree, or career skill. Seen as a leader statewide and nationally, LAPC is now seeking to expand its outstanding faculty by offering a full-time, Engineering Instructor in the Industrial Technology Department starting with the Fall 2024 semester.

                                                                                                        

DEPARTMENT:

LAPC Industrial Technology Department consists of Engineering, Machining, Electronics, Automotive, and Welding.  Programs in the department are career-focused, while the Engineering program also prepares students for transfer in a variety of engineering majors (ex. mechanical, civil, electrical, etc.), and offers an A.S. degree in Engineering as preparation for transfer.  The department also offers a career-focused Certificate of Achievement and A.S. degree in Engineering Graphics & Design Technology, a program that prepares students for entry-level positions as a mechanical drafter/designer/CAD technician.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

This faculty position would support both transfer and career pathways in Engineering and Engineering Technology.  The Engineering Technology pathway has a focus on mechanical/manufacturing fields.

Faculty members at LAPC are expected to create a learning-centered environment that supports students in fulfilling their educational goals.  The department recognizes the underrepresentation of many groups in engineering professions, and the successful candidate will implement strategies to close equity gaps and improve student success metrics.

In addition to teaching, duties associated with the position include leading the engineering programs and participation in a variety of campus and departmental activities such as faculty meetings, committee service, industry and university collaboration, student activities, office hours and curriculum/instructional development for engineering disciplines.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

In accordance with its mission as a community college, instruction at LAPC includes lower division courses . Faculty members at LAPC are expected to facilitate student learning by designing varied and exciting learning environments. The successful candidate will be assigned a variety of courses each semester to meet the 15-hour standard teaching load.  Daytime, evening, online, and weekend classes may be included in this assignment based on department needs.  The teaching obligation is based upon a 10-month calendar.  Additional summer and winter assignments may be available. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Teach courses in Engineering in accordance with established course outline;
  • Participate in the development and the assessment of student learning outcomes (SLOs) and program learning outcomes (PLOs):
  • Maintain scheduled office hours for student contact in accordance with the LACCD/AFT 1521 contract;
  • Participate in professional development activities and maintain current knowledge in the discipline;
  • Maintain accurate records (e.g., grades, attendance, class exclusions, etc.) and submit records in accordance to district policy and board rules;
  • Collaborate within the department, college, local high schools and industry partners;
  • Devote required time, in accordance to faculty contract, to campus-based responsibilities (committees, accreditation, etc.);
  • Participate in required program planning and annual program review;
  • Work collegially with members of the department, classified staff, students, faculty and administrators to maintain professional conduct and ethics, and foster a professional working environment;
  • Developing and implementing new and updated program and course curricula, as well as updating course materials and the course outlines of record for both transfer and CE courses;
  • Work with the college articulation officer and university partners to ensure articulation of LAPC engineering courses with C-ID courses and university courses;
  • Work with community/industry partners to ensure curriculum prepares students for careers in engineering fields;
  • Complete and submit required documents in accordance with district policy;
  • Develop resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology (Pierce Online / Canvas) to teach students in a multicultural environment;
  • Assume departmental duties as assigned by the chairperson (e.g., participate in program review, plan and attend advisory meetings, revise course outlines, assist with student advisement, and participate actively on campus committees).

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master's in any field of engineering; OR
  • Bachelor's in Engineering  AND Master's in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry or geology; OR
  • The equivalent from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background as well as accommodating any disabilities of community college faculty, students and staff.

 (NOTE: a bachelor's in any field of engineering with a professional engineer's license is an alternative qualification for this discipline)

 

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS - ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT AND COVID 19 VACCINATIONS:

A medical certificate indicating fitness to engage in administrative work is required for new employees at the applicant's expense prior to employment.

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status or have an approved exemption in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy.  Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  •        Master's in any field of engineering; OR
  • Bachelor's in Engineering  AND Master's in mathematics, physics, computer science, chemistry or geology; OR
  • The equivalent from an accredited college or university.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The current starting range is from $72,990 to $135,620 for the 10-month academic year depending on education and experience.  The doctoral differential is $4,610 per academic year.  The district provides an excellent retirement and benefits package including medical, vision, dental, and life insurance to the employee and eligible dependents.
