Functional Safety Manager

Job Information
The Functional Safety Manager is responsible for the oversight of all Functional Safety compliance activities in the development and maintenance phases for products marketed by the company. This includes establishing and managing the company’s policies and processes for Functional Safety compliance and documentation. The Functional Safety Manager will develop and manage a team that oversees implementation of Functional Safety compliance training, policies, and processes.  This team may include the need to identify, vet, and develop contractual agreements with outside third-party consultants, contractors, or service providers.
Role & Responsibility
Specific duties include understanding, interpreting and participating in the development of and application of various international standards, engaging in advocacy efforts on regulatory policies, conducting training for internal product system or component teams, facilitating control system safety assessments and product safety risk assessments, participating in design reviews and consulting with systems engineering design teams, auditing hardware and software assessments and participating in projects to further improve efficiency of the work group. 
Functional Safety Compliance: 

• Generate Functional Safety requirements and validation plans
• Plan & coordinate all necessary Functional Safety activities encompassing the life cycle of the product, while also defining project responsibilities regarding Functional Safety
• Perform product and system level hardware and software safety analysis
• Review and analyze system or component FMEA and FEMDA and other appropriate information from suppliers as related to Functional Safety
• Develop safety requirements, and support other activities in accordance with ISO 19014, ISO 13849, and ISO 25119
• Participate, develop and/or lead various assessment methods as required by projects, including MCSSA, HARA, FTA, FMEA, and MTTF
• Participate in design process to ensure that all safety requirements are implemented correctly
   

Collaboration & Training: 

• Interface closely with internal safety control system teams
• Collaborate with engineers globally to understand Functional Safety concepts
• Collaborate with supply chain management and engineers to support the development of supplier requirements necessary to achieve Functional Safety goals
• Conduct training for internal product system or component teams on assessment and calculation of achieved machine performance levels
• Coordinate development timing with key engineering and product management stakeholders
• Provide leadership on Functional Safety processes
   

Compliance Documentation: 

• Develop and maintain Functional Safety compliance documentation methods and systems
• Compile the appropriate documentation for supporting the Functional Safety performance claims
• Establish, archive, and execute record retention policy for compliance documentation
• Retrieve/produce Functional Safety compliance documentation as needed for audits or product inquiries

Job Requirement

• Education Required: Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent preferred
• Functional Safety Engineer Certification preferred
• Experience Required:  > 10 years 
• Travel Required:  > 25% 
• Experienced in application of Functional Safety standards for various products including ISO 19014, ISO 13949, ISO 25119, or ISO 26262 
• Experience conducting Machine Control Safety System Analysis (MCSSA), including the identification, and understanding of Safety Control Systems (SCS) and determining Functional Safety performance levels
• Experience conducting FMEA, HARA, and FTA
• Experience having taken one or more products from concept through the entire Functional Safety development process to production
• In-depth control systems and product knowledge preferred
• Project Management experience implementing a new process on an enterprise level scale and experience working with all functional areas of the company
• Contractor Management experience identifying external resources to assist with systems analysis
• Compliance Documentation Management - maintaining database of evaluations
