Outdoor Education Specialist 1 - Full-Time (Non-Exempt)
Rate: Pay Grade: D – $19.6892 hour/$40,953 annual to $30.9400 hour/$64,355 annual – minimum starting salary based on prior experience and education

Position Description:
Under direction of the Assistant Chief of Outdoor Education, the Outdoor Education Specialist 1 is responsible for the implementation of programs and special events in outdoor recreation and environmental education.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Plans and implements a variety of outdoor recreation and environmental based programs to meet the needs of the public. Programs include, but are not limited to, paddle sports, snow sports and other environmental education activities.
- Assists in the planning and operation of a variety of department special events including races, Outdoor Education events, and holiday themed events.
- Assists with implementing facility rentals of Outdoor Education Division facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in recreation or related field preferred, or a minimum 2 years of parks and/or recreation experience required.
- ACA Kayak or Standup Paddleboard Level 1 Instructor Certification or paddling experience preferred.
- Ohio Boating Education Certificate preferred.
- Lifeguard, First-Aid, and CPR certifications preferred or the ability to obtain Lifeguard Certificate within the first year of employment.
- 1-2 years prior experience in paddling, cross-country ski, snowshoeing, and other outdoor recreation activities preferred.
Position Requirements:
- Demonstrated ability to perform and have knowledge of various activities including kayaking, standup paddleboarding, canoeing, cross country skiing, swimming, hiking, and other activities as assigned.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a variety of equipment including, but not limited to, various watercraft and utility vehicles.
- Ability to safely operate and haul trailers.
- Skilled in customer service and interpersonal communication with the ability to interact professionally with all types of people.
- Skilled in communication, including written, oral, and listening.
- Ability to act with emotional intelligence including self-awareness, accurate self-assessment, sensitivity, honesty, reliability, trust, and consistency.
- Proficiency in computer software programs including Microsoft Office Suite.
- Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Will be required to work flexible hours, weekends, evenings and holidays.
- Must possess a valid drivers’ license and insurable on the Agency’s liability policy. Background check required.
