Job description

The Kennel Technician (KT) plays a critical role in caring for the dogs at the York County SPCA. In addition to providing animal enrichment, the KT is responsible for the general care and maintenance of shelter dogs including feeding, cleaning, disinfecting, grooming, vaccinating, and medicating shelter animals. Kennel Technicians have a physically demanding job due to nature of the work and handling of the dogs.

Position Requirements:

We are looking for one dedicated full-time Kennel Technician to work Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Friday 6am - 4:30pm.

Some holidays are also required.


Essential Kennel Technician Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs animal husbandry tasks such as cage cleaning, feeding, walking, and other animal care activities for the 70+ shelter dogs in our care
  • Operates the power washer and squeegees the dog kennels
  • Conducts bathing and medication administration
  • Cleans, does laundry and restocks the facility
  • Works with the Client Services Counselors, Kennel Manager, Behavior Technician and Communications Director to provide individualized animal descriptions to help promote adoptions
  • Observes and reports medical issues to the Kennel Manager
  • Observes and reports behavioral issues to the Foster & Behavior Technician
  • Has appropriate leash etiquette and observes all safety measures
  • Is able to clearly communicate between staff and volunteer dog walkers
  • Cares for, loves, and provides enrichment to all the dogs - big and small
  • Patience to handle and care for dogs of varying temperaments
  • Understands and identifies basic signals from an animal's body language
  • The ability to see and respond to dangerous situations
  • The ability to read and understand medical instructions and behavioral memos
  • The willingness to sign up for shortened shifts on the holidays to care for the animals

Qualifications:

  • 18 years or older
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs to restock dog food and occasionally lift animals
  • The physical ability to work 8-10 hour shifts either standing or walking
  • Frequently walk dogs over 80lbs on a leash
  • The ability to work in a noisy dog kennel
  • Thea ability to perform this job with or without reasonable accommodations
