Job description

Job Title: Jail Officer
Department: Sheriff’s Department
Reports To: Jail Corporal/Jail Sergeant
FLSA Status: Nonexempt

FULL TIME AND PART TIME POSITIONS AVAILABLE!

Principal Function: The Jail Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and order of the jail facility in accordance with department policies, procedures and applicable laws.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

1. Books prisoners in and out; accepts responsibility for prisoner possessions; performs inmate classification and reclassifications.
2. Performs strip searches within the necessary Constitutional requirements and issues jail uniforms; collects fingerprints; notifies Prosecuting Attorneys; collects demographic information and classifies all incoming inmates.
3. Ensures inmates abide by all rules of the jail.

4. Handles combative inmates to diffuse any arguments and/or fights.

5. Acts on inmate requests, medication needs, and handles inmate complaints.

6. Provides food to inmates, adhering to each inmate’s allergy and dietary restrictions.

7. Ensures a safe and clean environment is provided and all essential needs are provided.

8. Responds to inquiries from the public, family members, attorneys and courts regarding visitation and the status of inmates.

9. Maintains interior and exterior security of the jail facility to include reviewing surveillance cameras and participating in foot patrol.

10. Maintains and updates institution logs, incident reports, booking/release records, call, visitor and medical records and submits reports and summaries of activities based on established department deadlines.

11. Maintains and effective communication process with the Jail Corporal or Jail
Sergeant.

12. Completes any additional tasks as assigned by the Sheriff, or his or her designee.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience. Completion of Jail Officers School is required. Indiana Data and Communications System (IDACS) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification is required. Certifications in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Critical Incident Team, Taser and OC, Emergency Restraint Chair and Prisoner Control are required within one year of employment with the County. Previous experience working in a correctional facility is desired.
Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired:

1. Computer software skills required include: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, the Superion Jail Management System (JMS) and GPS monitoring.

2. The ability to understand and carry-out jail and criminal administrative procedures, policies and regulations is required.

3. A working knowledge of all Sheriff Department policies, procedures, rules and regulations as they relate to the operations of the jail, is required.

4. The ability to enforce rules and follow all established protocols and guidelines is required.

5. The ability to be skillful in the use of defensive tactics and communication is required.

6. The ability to transport inmates to and from court, other jails, prisons or other facilities is required.

7. A comprehensive knowledge of the geography of the County and Towns within the County is required.

8. The ability to operate all Sheriff Department vehicles is required.

9. The ability to skillfully handle all County-issued equipment such as firearms, tasers, batons, sprays, armor, cameras, portable radios, etc. is required.

10. The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.

11. The ability to handle minor maintenance issues, biohazard issues and violent inmates is required.

12. The ability to resolve conflicts between and among inmates is required.

13. A general understanding of report writing, while paying close attention to detail is required.

14. The ability to participate in emergency preparedness activities to include; drills and education on man-made and natural disasters as part of the emergency preparedness activities is required.

15. The ability to maintain and cultivate positive relationship with inmates, citizens and other County departments is required.

16. The ability remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.

17. The ability to attend meetings and conferences, as needed.

18. The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is desired.

19. The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently is exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to working near moving mechanical parts; work in high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; work with explosives; risk of radiation; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

The appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn on the job at all times in accordance with the department’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).

The County Jail is open 24-hours per day, seven days per week and this position may require work at any time during these hours and on the weekends and holidays. It also requires the ability to drive a County vehicle. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required.
