Full-Time Firefighter EMT or Paramedic

*Current certified Paramedics with the appropriate experience as stated below are eligible for lateral transfers if they meet the following conditions. Effective 07/01/2023:

• Completion of 12 months (1 year) as a FT Paramedic at another agency or a PT Paramedic for the Ankeny Fire Department shall be paid at Step 2 ($23.695).
• Completion of 24 months (2 years) as a FT Paramedic at another agency or a PT Paramedic for the Ankeny Fire Department shall be paid at Step 3 ($24.880).
• Completion of 36 months (3 years) as a FT Paramedic at another agency or a PT Paramedic for the Ankeny Fire Department shall be paid at Step 4 ($26.124).

Responds to emergencies and performs pre-hospital care, fire suppression activities, rescue, damage control, and property preservation.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions in English.
• Ability to write in English with a minimum number of spelling and grammatical errors.
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers and function as a team member.

• Shall possess a current State of Iowa Emergency Medical Services certification at time of hire and must obtain Paramedic certification within 24 months of hire.
• Shall possess Iowa Fire Fighter I, II and Hazardous Material Operations Level certification or equivalent within 18 months of hire.
• Shall possess or obtain ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800 within 18 months of hire.
• Shall possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license issued by the State of Iowa and be insurable to operate city vehicles and equipment.
• Must be able to perform functions as detailed in the Firefighting and EMS General Description of Duties document.
• Must be able to pass a physical ability test.
• Must be able to pass the physical exam per the requirements of the Iowa Municipal Fire and Police and Retirement System for FT personnel.

• IO Solutions, National Firefighter Selection Inventory Certificate (these are valid for 12 months. You must have a valid certificate on file by April 12, 2024).
• Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) or the Central Iowa Fire & EMS Testing Consortium Physical Ability Test (These are valid for 12 months. You must have a valid certificate on file by April 12, 2024).

• Firefighting and emergency response tasks can be very difficult, and are physically and psychologically demanding.
• Firefighting and emergency response personnel may be exposed to many toxic substances during incidents.
• Hazardous materials incidents may also involve exposures to a wide variety of toxic materials.
