    Job Summary:
    Biologists provide direct support to Biologist II, Senior Scientists, and Project Manager in the performance and oversight of field projects and operations, with an expected ratio of 80% field and 20% office work during a typical week. The primary focus is off-site at various project locations for 3-4 days per week, three weeks per month. The other week will be oriented to the support of other EAI projects that may include seagrass surveys, electrofishing, ichthyoplankton collection, sample sorting, water quality monitoring, reporting support, QA/QC, and other tasks as needed.
    The work entails being a member of a six-person team to capture fish and invertebrates from impingement screens, transfer into a mobile on-site laboratory, and monitor the health of captured specimens. Capture periods are for 24-hours followed by a 24-hour observation period. Work will be conducted in 8 to 12-hour shifts with lodging, transportation, and meals provided. One event will span a 72 to 84-hour period that includes preparation, travel to the site, system setup and commencement of sampling and observation period. After all specimens have been processed at the end of the observation period, the equipment will be drained, cleaned, and stored for transportation back to the EAI facility. Additional demobilization, cleaning, calibrations, etc. will be done the following day. A typical event week will be 40 hours per team member.
    Supervisory Responsibilities:
    • Assists in the direction of field personnel to ensure compliance and achievement of overall objectives.
    • May supervise field technicians, including tracking assignments, monitoring goal achievement, scheduling, compiling data, and assisting with reports.
    • Event preparations include printing datasheets, calibration of water quality meters, and staging/mobilizing equipment.
    • On-site equipment assembly in complex safety-conscious environments.
    • Careful handling of live fish and invertebrates upon capture with minimal stress to the specimens.
    • Meticulous data collection, entry, and verification.
    • Use of water quality meters and data loggers.
    • Ensure consistency with standard operating procedures and scope of work.
    • Assists with the preparation of supporting documents/receipts for invoicing.
    • Contributes to internal meetings and agendas/minutes.
    • Other tasks are assigned as needed to support new projects and individual professional development.

    Duties/Responsibilities:

    • Responsible for the preparation, ordering, and maintenance of field equipment.
    • Contributes to the preparation of reports and related project documents.
    • Prepares, performs QA/QC reviews, and provides comments on project data, scientific reports, and technical documents.
    • Tracks deadlines/deliverables and ensures consistency with standard operating procedures and scopes of work.
    • Tracks projects to ensure they are delivered on time within the stipulated scope and budget.
    • Prepares supporting documents/receipts for invoicing.
    • Provides support for agency/client meetings.
    • Assists with and may lead internal meetings and prepares agendas/minutes.
    • Reviews scientific literature, participates in continuing education activities, and/or attends conferences and seminars.
    • Other tasks are assigned as needed to support new projects and individual professional development.

    Additional Duties/Responsibilities:
    • May serve on ad-hoc committees at EAI (Ecological Associates, Inc).
    • May serve as coordinator of specialized tasks at EAI.
    • Be open to assisting with other EAI projects.

    Required Skills/Abilities:
    • Able to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Excellent organizational and record-keeping skills with attention to detail.
    • Ability to meet deliverable deadlines within the expected timeframes.
    • Excellent communication, data management, technical writing, and creative problem-solving skills.
    • Microsoft Office experience is preferred.
    • Work off-site frequently.
    • Travel frequently for short periods (i.e., 3-4 days).
    • Must possess a clean driving record, trailering experience preferred.
    • Able to follow standard operating procedures for multiple pieces of equipment.
    • Calibration of YSI water quality meters preferred.
    • Aquaculture or fish husbandry experience preferred.
    • Ability to identify problems or issues in the field and come up with effective solutions.

    Education and Experience:
    • Experience supervising field staff preferred.
    • Bachelor’s degree required.
    • At least two (2) years of related experience required.

    Desired Experience:
    • Fisheries experience'
    • Aquaculture experience
    • Marine fish identification experience (near-shore Atlantic)
    • Fish handling, measurement, weighing experience
    • Experience towing/parking trailers
    • Problem-solving in field environments

    Physical Requirements:
    • Able to work outdoors in extreme conditions (long hours, inclement weather, heat, humidity, cold, biting insects).
    • Perform work on unpaved, uneven surfaces (tripping hazards).
    • Perform work in, on, and around water (canals, rivers, lakes, oceans, etc.).
    • Must be able to stand, bend, sit, lift, and drive.
    • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.

    Pay Classification:
    Full-time, Salaried, Exempt, Benefit Eligible
    Pay range: $38,000 - $50,000 dependent upon experience.
