Position Summary
Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Communications Instructor.
The Communications Department is a one-person department within the larger Humanities Division. We are looking for a person prepared and interested in teaching communication courses that may include Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Communication, Intercultural Communications, Introduction to Mass Media, and Organizational Communications. This position reports to the Dean of Transfer and Allied Health and works closely with the Humanities Division Chair as well as other faculty and staff.

Salary placement for candidates with a master's degree and five (5) years of employment experience directly related to the position begins at $72,820 for a 173-day contract, September to June. Additional degrees, experience, and state-funded and negotiated increases will increase the salary. This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). Placement on the Salary Index Matrix (SIM) is in accordance with the BBCC Faculty Association Negotiated Agreement.
Big Bend offers candidates a straight-forward, supportive tenure process with three years to the first promotion along with generous support and funding for professional development. Our faculty benefit from a connection to a statewide network of conferences to enhance instruction. The anticipated start date for this position is September 9, 2024. However, the successful candidate may start as early as April 1, 2024.

Essential Job Duties
Responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
  • Prepare and teach communication courses; this may include day, evening, hybrid and online classes. Current courses include Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communications, Introduction to Communications, Introduction to Mass Media, and Organizational Communications.
  • Offer regular and predictable access to students through posted office hours, electronic communication, and other appropriate methods.
  • Instruct, assist, and motivate students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed substantive feedback on assignments and discussions.
  • Advise students; assist students in planning an educational program and in selecting courses, and when necessary refer students to appropriate student services for assistance.
  • Participate as an active member of working committees dealing with instruction, college-wide and department assessment, student matters and/or college related concerns.
  • Represent and advocate for the Communications Department at Humanities Division and campus-wide meetings.
  • Design, implement, and document assessment tasks for the Communications Department.
  • Work effectively with colleagues and students of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and be a positive contributing member of the campus community.
  • Provide advice and support for associate (adjunct) communications faculty.
  • Maintain positive and effective communications with students, faculty, administration and staff.
  • Foster a flexible, healthy learning environment with respect for student diversity.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth, development, and conduct.
  • Other duties as agreed to with division chair or administrator.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
At the time of application, all applicants must possess the following:
  • A Master's degree in Communications from a regionally accredited institution or in a closely related field with significant coursework in graduate-level communications.
  • Experience or participation with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socio-economic, physical, and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working / learning environment.
Additional Desirable Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching transfer-level communications courses.
  • Successful secondary or post-secondary teaching experience (community college, university, high school, or dual enrollment), community college experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting associate/adjunct faculty in a collegial manner.
  • Experience implementing strategies to improve student success and retention.
  • Experience with or commitment to practices grounded in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish proficiency.
  • Ability to begin teaching Spring Quarter, April 1, 2024.
