Job Description:

The Career Services and Advising Center is seeking a federal aid recipient for student employment. This position will be funded by federal Work Study dollars; only students that receive financial aid awards can be considered for this specific role. If you have questions about your award or are not certain that you are receiving financial aid please contact the Office of Financial Aid at extension 3156. Please see below the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.

Peer Career Assistants (PCAs) are student support staff who contribute to the mission of the Fitchburg State University Career Services and Advising Center. Peer Career Assistants are trained to provide additional support to assist Fitchburg State students with:

  1. Resume and cover letter editing and development
  2. Online resources including Handshake, SSC, Web4 and other CSA Center resources
  3. Course registration questions
  4. Job and internship searching
  5. In person drop-in hours

Additionally PCAs support the CSA Center staff with projects, events and workshops such as staffing the career fairs, leading workshops, and promoting events. PCA's will be expected to participate in marketing for the CSA such as creating Instagram posts and reels.

Being a PCA allows you to support other students while building professional skills and experience. PCAs will:

  1. Strengthen professional development skills (i.e. communication skills, marketing, program planning, problem solving, public speaking, digital platform expertise)
  2. Develop interpersonal and presentation skills
  3. Develop networking skills through connections with employers and career center staff

 


Requirements:

  1. Must be a current Fitchburg State sophomore, junior or senior
  2. Must be Work Study eligible
  3. Self motivated and able to work both as a team and independently
  4. Organized and able to multitask a variety of projects
  5. Strong verbal and written communication skills
  6. Interpersonal skills- ability to speak and work effectively with peers, staff and faculty
  7. Detail-oriented and creative
  8. Strong presentation skills
  9. Responsible and professional when working with sensitive and confidential information
  10. Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  11. Familiarity with Google Drive, Docs and Calendar
  12. Familiarity with social media

Preferred Skills But Not Required:

  1. Graphic design interest and/or experience
  2. Experience with video production

Job Responsibilities: The responsibilities of the PCA include:

Drop-In Hour Coverage: 1-2 hours/week of in person and/or remote drop-in hours. During drop-in hours PCAs will support students with:

  1. Resume critiques
  2. Cover letter critiques
  3. Basic job/internship search strategies
  4. Support with Career Services resources and platforms (SSC, Handshake, etc.)

Project Work: 2-4 hours/week of project work in any of the following project areas:

Marketing/Social Media:

  1. Assist with creating content for the CSA Newsletter
  2. Monitor CSA social media platforms
  3. Create flyers and marketing materials for CSA programs and events
  4. Create marketing and campaigns aimed at engaging and supporting students from marginalized identities
  5. Create reels for Instagram

Programming/Workshops:

  1. Assist with design, development and delivery of CSA workshops and programming
  2. Collaborate with student organizations to develop and deliver targeted workshops and programming
  3. Staff lobby tables, engage with other campus departments and athletics to increase student engagement with the center 
  4. Assist with logistics and set up for workshops and programs

Employer Relations/Early Career Engagement:

  1. Assist with searching for job and internship opportunities and assist with employer newsletter
  2. Support the Associate Director of Employer Relations & Internship Coordination
  3. Assist with logistics for career fairs and employer panel events


Additional Information:

Shift Information:  This is a student only posting and you must have Federal Workstudy money allocated to you in your financial aid package. Please check your Web4 account to see if you were granted Federal Workstudy funds BEFORE you apply for this position.

Shift will vary based on student schedules and the pay is $15 per hour.
