DEPARTMENT: Mental Health Counseling

POSITION SUMMARY:

Alma College seeks a faculty member with vision, a passion for cultivating relationships, and a deep commitment to quality to serve as the Founding Director for a new low-residency Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Key responsibilities of this position include: curriculum development, graduate student recruitment, program supervision and administration, and building relationships with external stakeholders. Candidates for the position should have significant professional experience working in clinical settings and in higher education. The ideal candidate will be a skilled and creative administrator who values collaboration and embraces the challenge of bringing a vision to life.

The Founding Director will hold a dual faculty/administrative appointment. The director, working in coordination with an interdisciplinary advisory group of faculty and reporting to the Dean of Graduate Studies, will oversee all elements of the new program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Oversee program development, faculty recruitment and assignment, and organization of the unit.
*Assure that Alma College’s values regarding Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion are evident in all aspects of the program.
*Supervise the work of faculty and students in the program, assuring quality and integrity.
*Teach 1-3 courses annually once the initial cohort is enrolled.
*Represent the program to the larger College, shape the emphasis of the program, and address issues relevant to the program’s goal of excellence and growth.
* Coordinate the design and implementation of student recruitment and retention strategies.
*Contribute to the development of program budgets and maintain spending in line with projections.
* Establish and encourage mutually beneficial collaborations with other clinical, research, and academic facilities.
* Build and maintain communication with friends of the program, as well as local, state, and national professional associations and prepare to engage alumni.
* Maintain an atmosphere of respect, collegiality, support, and encouragement for diligence, creative effort, and professional excellence among faculty, staff, and students.
* Develop and implement academic standards and policies.
* Promote ongoing outreach to alumni, the Alma campus, and the external community.

During implementation, the director will work with the faculty advisory group to ensure that the program is developed in accordance with Alma College’s standards and accrediting body requirements. Specific tasks include revising the proposed curriculum, creating ongoing links to the Alma campus and the professional community, and completing all necessary program approvals.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Candidates should have a deep knowledge of professional standards, strong professional connections, and proven administrative skills, preferably in higher education. The director must be an individual who is collaborative and decisive, and adept at balancing vision with the pragmatics of implementation. A terminal degree in Mental Health Counseling, or a closely related field, in addition to professional licensure as a counselor is required.

COMPENSATION:

Alma College anticipates the salary for this combined faculty/administrative will be $120,000-130,000 depending upon qualifications.
