Description
Keeping Washington Clean and Evergreen
The (EAP) program within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill aForest Practices/Effectiveness Monitoring Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 3) position. This position is locatedin our Headquarters Office inUpon hire, you must live within a commutable distance from the duty station.
In this Natural Resource Scientist position, you will join a dynamic and collaborative applied research team - Washington State's and program - focused on documenting, understanding, and evaluating the health of freshwater streams across the state in response to restoration or best management practices. In this role, you will oversee the monitoring of physical and biological processes in streams in response to process-based restoration projects. You will also serve as a scientist and technical specialist on the forest practices adaptive management program's Cooperative Monitoring, Evaluation, and Research committee (CMER). This scientific committee designs and implements studies and programs to monitor and test the effects forest practice rules have on key aquatic conditions and processes. You would be working with multi-caucus Science Advisory Groups and project teams to oversee and conduct complex research projects.

Duties
What makes this role unique?
In this role, you will serve as a Natural Resource Scientist, leading interesting biological and habitat monitoring projects primarily associated with the implementation of stream restoration projects. You will also serve as a scientist and technical specialist representing Ecology on the forest adaptive management programs Cooperative Monitoring, Evaluation, and Research committee (CMER) - focused on the effects of forest management practices on key aquatic conditions and processes.
What you will do:
  • Participate in various scientific advisory committees.
  • Evaluate and monitor the effects of the state's forest practices rules.
  • Coordinate forest practices, watershed health monitoring and salmon habitat restoration studies with state, federal, and tribal scientists as well as private land managers to maintain consistency among methods and interpretation of results.
  • Plan and implement field logistics and data collection efforts for biological and habitat effectiveness monitoring projects.
  • Provide professional recommendations regarding future watershed health effectiveness monitoring studies and regulatory implications.
  • Direct and prepare publication of quality assurance plans, technical reports, and presents results at scientific conferences.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Years of required experience indicated below are full-time equivalent years. Full-time equivalent experience means that any experience where working hours were less than 40 hours per week will be prorated in order to meet the equivalency of full-time. We would calculate this by looking at the total hours worked per week, divide this by 40, and then multiply by the total number of months worked. Examples of the proration calculations are:
  • 30 hours worked per week for 20 months: (30/40) x 20 months = 15 months full-time equivalent
  • 20 hours worked per week for 12 months: (20/40) x 12 months = 6 months full-time equivalent
Experience for both required and desired qualifications can be gained through various combinations of formal professional employment, education, and volunteer experience. See below for how you may qualify.
Option 1:
A Bachelor's degree involving major study in Hydrogeology, Geomorphology, Stream/Aquatic Ecology, Limnology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or other allied field
AND
Four years of professional-level research work experience in Hydrogeology, Geomorphology, Stream/Aquatic Ecology, Limnology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related field
Option 2:
A Master's degree one of the above fields and two years of professional- level research work experience in Hydrogeology, Geomorphology, Stream/Aquatic Ecology, Limnology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related field
Option 3:
A Ph.D. in Hydrogeology, Geomorphology, Stream/Aquatic Ecology, Limnology, Biological Sciences, Chemistry or related field
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
Obtain and maintain a valid driver's license
Desired Qualifications:

  • Coursework in Environmental Science, Natural Science, Stream Ecology, Chemistry, statistics.
  • Forestry or related field would be advantageous.
  • Ability to conduct field work under a variety of conditions.
  • Experience collecting water samples is desired.
  • Ability to operate cars, vans and pickup trucks in various weather conditions and after dark.
  • Extensive experience with data analysis and data management and scientific writing.
  • Environmental sampling techniques and, environmental data analysis techniques including statistics.
