Responsibilities

The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Provincial Forensic Pathology Unit, Ontario Forensic Pathology Service is seeking four Forensic Pathologists to assist in the delivery of high quality forensic pathology services to coroners, police, crown attorneys, lawyers and courts in Ontario. 

This exciting work will be carried out at the state of the art Forensic Services and Coroners Complex. 

The Provincial Forensic Pathology Unit (PFPU) is the main autopsy service for the Province of Ontario operating under the auspices of the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service. The PFPU performs over 6500 medico-legal autopsies per year including all homicides and criminally suspicious deaths of adults, infants and children in the greater Toronto area. In addition, the Unit acts as a referral centre for complex cases for other regions of the Province that do not have access to forensic pathology expertise. As forensic pathologists at the PFPU, you are actively involved with postgraduate training and continuing medical education in forensic pathology. 

NOTE: 

  • Successful candidates may be required to do occasional work in the North/underserviced regions within the province. 
  • This competition will be used to create an eligibility list to fill upcoming Forensic Pathologists opportunities.

What can I expect to do in this role? In this role, you will: 

  • Deliver high quality forensic pathology services to coroners, police, Crown Attorneys, lawyers and courts in Ontario. 
  • Assume responsibility for complex cases as an acknowledged expert in the specialized field of forensic pathology. 

 

Qualifications

Mandatory Qualifications:

  • You have a Medical degree from a recognized university and licensed or eligible for license to practice medicine in Ontario. 
  • You have a certification with Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) as a specialist in Anatomical or General Pathology by examination or equivalent certification. 
  • You have one year of postgraduate training or vocational training in forensic pathology at a recognized institution or university (e.g., university-based forensic pathology fellowship, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited fellowship). 

Technical Knowledge: 

  • You have knowledge of and experience in forensic pathology in order to attend scenes, perform autopsies, analyze and interpret the results. 
  • You have the ability to provide expertise, advice and training to investigating agencies, legal and medical professionals, and certify cause and manner of death. 
  • You have knowledge of the Coroners Act, Criminal Code, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and other related legislation that applies to death investigation to ensure compliance when providing consultation and professional advice. 
  • You have a broad knowledge of applicable legislation, rules of evidence and investigative techniques in order to collaborate and interact with police and legal and medical professionals. 
  • You have knowledge of the judicial system including rules of evidence in civil and criminal cases to prepare reports, provide expert opinions and present evidence in courts of law. 

Leadership Skills: 

  • You can engage team members in a positive and inclusive work environment, promoting innovation and creativity. 
  • You can demonstrate effective working relationships with colleagues, and internal/external stakeholders. 

Project Management Skills: 

  • You have the ability to be responsible for delivering high quality forensic pathology services to coroners, police, Crown Attorneys, lawyers and courts in Ontario. 
  • You can contribute to effective quality assurance, tissue management and health and safety practices of the unit. 
  • You have knowledge of change management principles and best practices and demonstrated experience in leading change initiatives. 

Communication and Relationship Management Skills: 

  • You have good judgment and political acuity to deal with highly visible, complex and sensitive issues. 
  • You have the ability to maintain effective liaison and collaboration with key stakeholders such as with other medical professionals, law enforcement agencies, lawyers, etc. 
  • You have superior oral and written communication skills with demonstrated ability to prepare and deliver presentations, reports, recommendations and assessments.

Compensation

Salary: $321,290.00 - $390,569.00 Per Year
