Forensic DNA Laboratory Analyst II

Duties and Responsibilities: 

• Conduct the exploitation of a variety of evidence items submitted for DNA analysis.  

• Perform DNA analysis on both reference and forensic samples with various levels of template DNA, including touch DNA samples, using validated protocols. 

• Perform interpretation of single-source profiles and complex mixtures, both manually and with probabilistic genotyping software. 

• Independently organize, manage, and prepare forensic cases and reports with an attention-to-detail that ensures accuracy prior to submission for technical review. 

• Utilize and maintain a variety of modern scientific equipment including real-time PCR systems, thermal cyclers, genetic analyzers, and next-generation sequencing platforms. 

• Perform general laboratory housekeeping activities, including maintaining working-stock levels of consumables and ensuring a clean work environment 

• Review and edit experimental protocols, standard operating procedures, and instructions. 

• Expand technical programs through the design and execution of validations and method enhancement / improvement projects focused on new kits, instruments, and protocols for use in casework. 

• Support occasional deployments to OCONUS laboratories on a voluntary basis. 

• Other tasks as assigned. 

Minimum Requirements: 

• US Citizenship.  

• Active Secret security clearance. 

• A bachelor's degree in forensic science, Biology, Chemistry or a related field with 5 years of directly relatable experience. 

• Meet requirements of FBI Quality Assurance Standards for DNA Analyst and ability to provide transcripts.  

• Must be able to provide transcripts confirming successful completion of course work in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology.  

• Coursework and/or training in statistics and/or population genetics as it applies to forensic DNA analysis is also highly preferred, or ability to complete the training for the program.   

Desired Qualifications:  

• Experience working as a DNA analyst in an accredited forensic DNA laboratory/system. 

• Experience maintaining forensic DNA laboratory equipment. 

• Experience using GeneMapper ID-X, STRMix and/or similar STR analysis software.  

• Two years’ experience working in the IC (intelligence comnmunity) environment. 

• Exceptional attention to detail to ensure accuracy in analysis, documentation, and case management. 

• Ability to work independently to ensure tasks are completed efficiently. 

• Ability to effectively communicate the results of DNA testing, both orally and in writing, to a wide variety of customers.  

• Proven ability to translate requirements and observations into clearly defined written products (briefings, reports, white papers) in short timeframes. 

• Certification by the American Board of Criminalistics or similar.
