Job description

Consistent with our scientific mission, The Rockefeller University established the Ford Center Incubator to support and help grow biotechnology start-ups. The incubator is located in newly renovated space on the university campus on the Upper East Side of New York City. Providing laboratory and office spaces, shared equipment and meeting spaces, resources, and services, the incubator offers an environment where biotech entrepreneurs can develop their ideas and products collaboratively and cost-effectively to advance their life science ventures.

Reporting to the Laboratory Operations Manager of the Ford Center Incubator, the Incubator Laboratory Technician will assist in the day-to-day maintenance and operations of the laboratory facilities within the Incubator, including but not limited to handling all receiving and distribution of chemicals to clients, maintaining common supplies and equipment provided by the Incubator, and working with the Laboratory Operations Manager to ensure that Incubator clients operate in a safe manner that is compliant with incubator policy.


Assist the Laboratory Operations Manager in the laboratory operations and administration of the Ford Center Incubator, including but not limited to:

  • Receiving and evaluation of chemical and reagent deliveries.
  • Review Safety Data Sheets of received items.
  • Maintain and monitor chemical inventories for all Incubator clients.
  • Organize, stock, and maintain common laboratory supplies.
  • Ensure common areas are clean and organized.
  • Calibrate common equipment as appropriate and monitor/maintain usage logs.
  • Assist with maintaining laboratory training records.
  • Work with university Laboratory Safety and Environmental Health group to ensure all chemical and biohazardous waste is appropriately labeled and disposed of.
  • Provide technical assistance to Incubator clients on the usage of instrumentation.
  • Additional duties and special project as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Ideal candidate must possess at least 2 years’ of related work experience in a multi-user scientific laboratory setting, either in an academic or commercial context.
  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, chemistry, or a related field is required.
  • Must possess an interest in life science, operations, and entrepreneurship.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced multi-tasking environment and to prioritize effectively is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills needed.
  • Must be detail-oriented and highly organized.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • An advanced technical degree, including Ph.D. or Master’s degree, is preferred, but may be substituted with professional experience.
  • Prior experience working in a Biotech Incubator/accelerator environment is highly desired, either as a laboratory user or as part of the organization’s operations.
  • C14 holder is desirable

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on various factors, including but not limited to organizational budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The hiring range provided represents The Rockefeller University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.
